JBL Model 250 Ti Restore

Nice! I did not see anything on top of those beautiful speakers...I did not see anything on top of those beautiful speakers...I did not see anything on top of those beautiful speakers. :yikes:

Appropriate actions have been taken so the Chihuahua stays right where he should. He's been on all my speakers for years. Non skid rubber pads do the trick. No vibrations or movement even at stupid volume levels.

You'll really hate the right one. But they have both been on top of my main speakers a long time.

Why on earth were you 'prepared to be underwhelmed' after having seen those amazing drivers out of the speaker? I have never before or since seen a tweeter with a magnet structure like the 044Ti. And the LE14H1 is just a beast !

The 250Ti was the culmination of decades of JBL know how. And it ushered in a new era of focus on the cabinet design with that sloping narrow baffle.

They aren't the last word in resolution compared to a more modern design, but they will flat out rock with the best of them. Power them well and feed them a quality source and you may be amazed at what they can do. They saw me through a lot of system upgrades and they were always honest about the changes happening upstream.

It takes a 10k speaker in today's market to fully out do them in all categories. Sure you can best them in this area or that for less, but to really best them all around you need to spend some big coin.

Get that thread going in the Lansing area already so we can get into amps and overall system synergy....

;-)

I know those speakers, with enough power they will move across the floor, ... the pooch is broom fodder.

You might want to raise the fronts up with simple 1"x1" stock, as well as bringing them out a few inches. the Imaging and voicing changes are dramatic.
a balancing act, not to loose to much bass support from the back and side wall

I had never heard a set of JBL worth purchasing but these are changing my mind.

My Polk SDA 2.3's are just out of the picture so I am limited on space right now. They are like 3/4 sized refrigerators. I have about 600 pounds of speaker side by side

I've just started getting some crackle on one of my tweeters depending what I'm listening too. They are especially not fond of ZZ Top and Beck.
I've read there is some fluid dries up and mucks up the voice coil or something. There is a DIY fix using eggcrate foam but what are the symptoms that people are doing this ? I can't see how a gummed up VC would cause intermittent crackle.

Any thoughts appreciated... especially the productive ones!

No fluid in these tweeters to "gum up" a VC if you're talking about the JBL 250Ti mentioned in the first posting.

There is a damping foam in there, a delicate but doable R&R foam should be covered somewhere in these pages.

What speakers are you talking about? It would be best to start your own thread if you want tweeter help.

This is my thread .. hellooo is this thing on? I have 250ti but thanks !

Crackling sounds more like a loose connection or dirty volume control. When does it do it? One speaker only or both. If its doing it with loud bass songs I would check the speakers crossover to driver connections.

Over the next couple of days I'm going to swap out my vintage Yamaha receiver I'm using as a Pre with an Adcom I have to check the possibility it's the receiver.
It especially didn't like LaGrange and sharp dressed man.
I guess I will start there. I had just been reading up on fluid issue could never really find a symptom of when it happens.

The 250Ti's have no drivers with fluid in them.

Another thing to do is get a paper towel tube or something and hold it to your ear and check each driver to see if its just one crackling or all of them. If its just one then you have loose connections in the speaker. If all of them do it check the cables to the speakers from the amp. Another possibility is a bad solder joint on the crossovers.

Process of elimination from the speakers back.

The original foam JBL used tends to turn to goo over time, and that's what gums up the voice coil gap - not ferrofluid (or any other fluid). That's what guys are talking about when they mention cleaning the goo out of the gaps, and a harsh sound is often described as a symptom.

Sometimes it just congeals in the VC gap and reduces output. Don't think I have ever heard someone say it causes a crackling sound. That sounds like something wrong father upstream....
