JBL speakers are they really that good?

I'm sure JBL was and is innovative in many aspects but I never was under the impression they were anywhere close to being avant garde in sound or style compared to other vintage speaker manufacturers of the day.

Someone needs to call the FAA before my eyebrow interferes with a jetliner.

It is what it is, just adding my 2 cents which is just a valuable as anyone else's.

What it is is - virtually worthless as a comparison between those two speaker models, given the conditions you stated. Try it again when you at the very least:

- Drive both by the same amp or receiver.
- Compare both in unmodified form.
- Run both through the sub, or neither through it.
- Same placement, not one stacked on the other.

Thanks Sam, I needed a chuckle.

Back to Ops original post, I've had a couple of studio monitors now (4313b and 4410) and I can attest to them being extremely well built. The drivers are of excellent build quality and the crossovers are very robust.

So are they really that good? .....IMO yes.

Punctuation, spelling, and grammar are important to being understood—here and elsewhere. :saywhat:

JBL's current and vintage products will certainly give you what you're looking for. The 4311 isn't necessarily the best choice, though. You might want to let us in on your budget and your current available amplification if you want a worthwhile answer.

Otherwise, "Yes".

"Junk But Loud" heh heh

Are they really that good? The top models --> Well worth a listen to decide for yourself if you have the opportunity.

Very good:)
Let me try again.
With the esteemed history JBL has, I would think in retrospect that offerings, circa 1970's and '80s, the L-300 and L250ti would have been surpassed by more impressive systems from such an esteemed speaker builder.
I think there were more interesting things being done by other speaker builders during said period.
However by sticking to what they know best have survived to produce stuff I presume is better than ever.
IMHO.

I admired their machine shop work but was not interested in owning the speakers. The 14 inch midwoofers for an econowaveguide project otoh might be interesting.

I should preface this and say I'd love to own a warehouse full of these:)
I've heard both and they sound very good perhaps surpassed by the 43xx's which admittedly I have never been fortunate to have heard.

Are they really that good ?
=depends on your definition of good.
they make some good speakers and managed to make a name for themselves.

there are a LOT of good speakers either vintage or new.
some folks think that owning a pair of "JBL's" is the holy grail with status,
some say the same about Bose.or ADS or whoever.

Since I got into this hobby two years ago I've been gradually discovering my own tastes in sound and have been dialing it in ever since. Its been the poor mans approach: using limited resources at yard sales and on CL to pick up speakers that show promise. Started with PSB...musical, yes, but a little soft sounding. Then NHT...way too bright in the highs and thin in the bass department. Def Techs...loud, but not musical. Same with MB Quart. Then I found an old pair of KEF 105's...great imaging, very musical and strong but lacking the punch i like from a kick drum. Onto a pair of Optimus 1b's....wonderful kick, great bass and overall tone but no imaging. Then I find an old pair of University triaxials which were a bit boomy, but delivered glorious golden highs and room filling dispersion, but no imaging. Now, I've got a pair of JBL's...the L-26 monitor. By far the best imaging I've heard. So much so, that it seems as if they would beat all the others I've had even if i kicked them over and left them however they landed. Very musical, nice full bass with that kick I need plus a bright but not brittle sound that made me realize what the optimus speakers were lacking. At this point, I have to say the JBL's are better than all those others, to my ears, by a mile. And they ALL are pretty respectable speakers. I say this on this thread because I don't give a rats ass about JBL. I just care about getting the most pleasing sound I can and these were the next ones that showed up on the path. I'm sure I can find better and will, but for now I feel like JBL has gone and designed a speaker with me, personally, in mind. So much so that I've given most of those others away.

Yes, JBLs are like Corvettes in that regard, with their highly-evolved V8s or leaf-sprung suspension: Basic direct radiator / horn systems, backed up by years of gradual engineering evolution, rather than radically different approaches like electrostats or plasma or whatever.

Lets start with this - Which speakers did you buy so they are better than the JBL?

I had some friends with varying models of JBLs i.e. L100 and newer...some running through some relatively competent equipment (Marantz Japan, etc) and I would grow tired of them quickly.

Lively...maybe accurate...but just didn't fit my ears.

Conversely, I really, really life the sound of the Altec 604 duplex series. With subwoofer of course.

Presently I am pushing a pair of 1960s Altec Lansing Seville's with a 12 watt per channel circa 1960 Harman Kardon made vacuum tube Coronet amp/receiver. I don't get tired. Is this a EL34 amp? Nope..but very sweet nonetheless. Never get tired.

I can go to our local show room and be wowed by gimmicky stuff but ultimately they don't sound any better musically than my pathetic little tube Coronet receiver and old Altecs.

Now, are they louder and have lots of lights and stuff?....yep. But musically ...nah. Take a listen to sax player Grace Kelly (via spotify) or on turntable...my God does it sound good.

I bought a pair of JBL 6x9's cheap on Ebay and stuck em in the doors of a Grand Marquis I had, with the factory deck, they sounded superb. Probably the best sounding 6x9's I've ever had, hated to sell the car afterwards.

Yeah - most of the serious JBL fans will admit the L100 is a fun-but-fake design ... there are SO many better models to choose from ...
and about 6x9 car speakers - those days are gone, my friend!

Classic. Well done.
