Jensen LS-6 Speaker Owner's Needed

Thanks for the pictures and information. My woofers were not poly, but paper cones as yours are. My surround's were originally mounted from the top though. I have rebuilt the crossover's and replaced the binding posts which required making a new board for both. I look forward to their completion and giving them a listen. I'm curious as to your thoughts about their sound and what you may be comparing them with.

Still no info for the B variation which must have been the last incarnation, but yes all Jensen of that era had green foam so if yours were not green and glued to the top perhaps they were already refoamed once??? or must have been a speaker that was always subject to design and manufacturing changes. I have not had a chance to truly play with mine and won't till I get the house to myself then I will put the screws to them!!!!! I just refoamed a pair of Mach Two's as well and the Jensen sound is not as bass heavy short of cranking up tone controls and engaging loudness circuit they are fairly accurate and not lacking much just do not produce as much bass until exceeding 1 watt, the mid's are maybe a little on the harsh side but once again have not really played with them, the Mach two tweeters of which I had an extra set sound fantastic and are highly underrated, I always thought they were piezo's but are actually decent quality fluid cooled aluminum diaphragm drivers, in retrospect I should have replaced with soft domes but the R2D2 look is pretty cool and adds a touch of modern flair to their dated looks. Oh yeah they are easily mid to upper 90's efficient.

If I'm not mistaken the "B" version only had a change to the tweeter, why, I don't know. I truly believe the specs are the same, but specs are just specs.

Looking a few posts above yours and you can see the pictures of my woofers. Yes, they were aqua colored that turned green and mounted on the top of the cone. I only replace surround's in the original manner that they were installed.

I had a pair of 5's that I sold and I have another pair in my pile of restoration projects. I was always was on the lookout for a pair of 6's since they are wood veneer and should sound close to the 5's with a bit more base since the driver's are the same excluding the 15" woofer. Cash flow at the time made me sell the 5's, but I thought they were pretty darn good sounding. That's why I have another pair of 5's and now the 6's. Not top of the line speakers in my opinion, but you can't go wrong owning a pair. Let me know how you like yours once you can spend a bit more time with them. :music:

I am planning on doing some A & B testing with a pair of Mach Two speakers I just refoamed, I wish like hell the LS6B woofers had foam glued to topside instead of underneath, must have been a very rare variant near end of production because multiple foam sellers all said that replacement foam is not available for mine. Just came down with the flu

Finally got around to giving these LS6B boxes a good listen and holy cow are they good from the mids to the highs, these things bring the drum kit right in to the room with you, I evaluate all speakers on their ability to reproduce drums and I could clearly hear the snare drum wires vibrating against the skins which is saying something, the Mach Two tweeters I added really do a great job on cymbals and all the related sounds drums make over 10,000 Hz. In short I was blown away and was hearing detail and presence normally not attainable at this price point. I will endeavor to test mid bass and down when no one is home as they do not seem to wake up until you really put the screws to them but what I have heard so far is fairly tight and pleasing to the ear as well.

Wow, it sounds like you are enjoying them so far. I noticed that you didn't replace the crossover capacitors yet, but I would recommend that you do in the future. I normally use the same type as the manufacturer did with good results, but that's a whole other can of worms. Looking forward to your next update.

I am on fence about doing the crossovers because they sound so damn good as is, I hate to toy with success but at same time they should at minimum be tested, it might be a while because I am using them now:music:

I have had my Jensen 24 since 1976. Refoamed of course. I was hesitant about recapping, but did so about 5 years ago using same value caps. I also added the coil to the circuit which must have been a later addition to the OPC24.

The result was a "tamer" less fatiguing speaker.

I have not sat down and attempted any listening much beyond a couple of songs due to where they currently sit which is literally in between two other ongoing speaker projects!! Seems I can never seem to call any them done. But yes I could imagine these could become a little tiresome as they are quite bright.

Check out the L-Pad settings and how the Mach Two tweeter poke in to the grills, yeah I did not consider that when I decided to install them but I am OK with it and think they look just peachy without the grills because of them.

These sound like a pair of old Cerwin Vega D9's I used to have after I upgraded them using Morel Tweeters with similar results on the high end.

I have owned 2 pair of LS-6b speakers since new. I gave a set to my parents and kept the other pair. I used to power them with my pioneer sa9500II. They definitely crank and made for great parties in the late 70s. I finally sold off a pair to buy fenders for my car restoration. I still have a pair after all these years. I have refomed the woofers like 5 -7 years ago with a kit I purchased on eBay. The woofers were originally blue foam and the mids are grey. Original tweeters were the small fabric black dome. I had one replacement under warranty that does no longer match. They replaced with a Mylar screen covered unit. Now the L pads are shot on both and the mids are starting to rot. Another project for down the road. Or maybe just to finally sell off. The cabinets are great condition still.

Thanks for the interest and information @KKFisher. Mine have been in progress for far to long now, but hopefully I will be able to get back to them next week an finish them in the next month or so. Pictures and thoughts to follow of course.

Picked up a pair of 6B's recently for project, all original. From too much research I conclude 6B used C-9849 but it was fitted with two different cones. One smooth cone with flat attach surround and the other with ribbed cone and angle, rear attach surround. Even if you wanted to try, the flat versus angle surround dimensions are different. They no fitto. I have angle attach and closest appears to be one used on E-V DL15 or Cerwin Vega AT15. If doing rear attach the crucial dimension is roll ID has to clear the cone edge which i have at 12 3/8", maybe 12 7/16". Several different dimensions out on web for the E-V foams but super nice guy Gene at SpeakerExchange measured an actual piece and showed 12 1/2" so that will do it for me. Even though folks say these all come from same place, if the others say there's measure at 12 or 12 1/8" I'll take their word for it.

Congratulations on your newly acquired Jensen's @Pat B! Wow, that's really odd that yours have different cones, possibly a re-cone in the past? Post some pics if possible. I attached a pic of my woofers with new surrounds, but I still have not got them up and running, lol.

I'll get some pics up later today, I know better. There's at least one other member here who posted pics somewhere in this thread or possibly the other thread with the same cones - the ribs are easier to spot than the edge. Same blue to green color change over time. I should be able to get some pics of the woofer I haven't prepped for new surround. It will have remaining foam and show the rear attach.

I guess it's a small quantity and others may have skipped refoam and replaced woofers - there seems to be alot of these with non-original woofers floating around.

Oh boy, time flies! Life seems to have gotten in my way, lol. I just glued the midrange drivers foam to the basket and glued the gaskets to the front. I previously sanded the cabinets, but it's time for final sanding after I check for any veneer patches required. This project has really dragged on, so sorry. Pictures and progress coming soon.
