Jensen PR 400 info/opinions wanted

I just picked up a set of Jensen PR 400 speakers. They are in working condition. As a quick test I hooked them to a receiver and all drivers seem to work fine.

I have tried searching the site and google but not much info can be found for 1965 era Jensen speakers. Any info or opinions are welcome.

I was working in the basement last night with these hooked up and I must say they sound very good. Please any info or comments welcome.

OK, they must be late '60's, then (as in, they weren't using the cone-tweets by that point).

Dome mid and tweeter? (Sono-Dome?)

I like this speaker already...
 
The only thing I can find is a print ad on the big auction site that is from 1965. I don't want to link it here, but a search for Jensen PR-400 will take you to it.
 
Bump. Please any one with any info or opinions. I still can not find any more than what is in the paperwork I already have.

:thmbsp: Thanks cablephil, but that link only goes up to the late 50's and from what I can find these are 1965 vintage. It does give me hope that some more info can be found.

Ya know, sometimes there just isn't much information out there on the jewels we bring home. This thread is/will get picked up by the search engines and over time people will stop by and offer up any information they have. With those brochures/owners manuals you have, that's probably more than most have.

The big question is, what are you going to do with them and have you put them through The Paces yet?

You may be right about the very little info.
I have been using them for about a week or so as I work on my basement. Its not the best area for sound as it is concrete floor and block walls. But I have to say I think these are keepers. Very full sound and the image is great. They also seem to go deeper than I ever expected speakers that old to go.

I'm thinking recap and re-finish the cabs and they may replace the SC-99a Pioneers I was going to use when the man-cave gets done.

That and a little fiberglass inside and you're done! If you have a meter to test the old caps, that would be interesting. I kinda like to see how well the old caps hold together or how far they drift. You've got a real find there, I'm jealous!

What are you driving them with? If you mentioned it, I missed it. I'm without any tube power and am so interested to listen to my collection powered by something so different.

Fiberglass and ported speakers just seems like a bad idea to me. I like to use polyfill on speakers with open ports. I happen to have some, but will need more for these. My meter will test caps but it may be a while before I get to that. They sound good now so I'm going to just use them like they are and just put some fill in them. I got a bunch of speakers that need caps so I may as well order them all at once. But right now other jobs are higher up on the list of thing to do.

I'm using a Pioneer SX-828 to power them now and the sound is sweet. If some tubes happen to show up I'll grab em quick. I also have a few other receivers and amps, but they are all SS. I had a heathkit tube amp many years ago that would have been perfect for these and to this day kick myself for selling it.

Yeah, I had and sold a Voice of Music integrated amp many years ago. Today? OH yeah I wish I had that. The 828 sounds like an excellent match for those rigs. If they sound sweet, leave the caps for another time. I wouldn't bother for now either. The recent acquisition of some early Rectilinear III's required new caps. One speaker you had to push 10 watts or more to just hear the tweeters, not right.

Any plans for making your concrete area for the Jensens more sound hospitable?

Oh yes. I got some plans to make a real man-cave with over half the open basement. Stud walls, insulation, carpet floor and drop celing are all part of the plan. That's one of those projects higher on the list I was talking about.

I have already started. Cleaning this up was the first step. Complete waterproofing is next. My house was an inheritance and it was a real mess when I got it.

I'm sure I will post about it when it gets done. Hey that does sound good, "Purple's Man Cave Room of Sound". Hope you don't mind if I borrow it.
