I've seen it twice already.. The flop press is a bunch of BS IMO. The movie itself; I really liked, and I'm and old fan of the J.C. series. The marketing on the other hand was pathetic... I'll probably catch it once more at least.

I was a huge fan of the books and thought the movie was decent.

I think if they would have stuck with just the first book instead of taking parts from all 3 books it might have made a better movie.

This what they where trying to do with the Ring series, these idiots wanted to compress all three books into a single movie. Peter Jackson absolutely refused to do it this way. After 10 years of shopping around finally found a producer who said well there are three books so there needs to be three movies. Just think of the cliff hanger it would have been to have The Princess of Mars end, The atmospheric plants broken down, John Carter is back on earth and he doesn't know if Dejah Thoris alive or dead. Please see what happens in the New Blockbuster The Gods of Mars.

I've never heard of the books, but the movie just looked absolutely dumb to me, with terrible CG in what I saw in the preview. I'm sick of cartoony special effects. They don't have to be like that. It takes a good director to pull it off but it can be done. Look at District 9.

Hard to believe a film that has drawn in $270 million worldwide so far, on a $250 million budget is a flop.

The write down is mainly accountant speak since its cut off is only March 31, only 22 days into its release. The number is being blown out of proportion to say the least.

Don't forget distribution and marketing $$. Its not just making back the money, but making a profit for the studio in the place of whatever else they could have produced instead. If it just breaks even- you've still had the studio running from months w/o profit. Imagine making an amp for $300 in parts cost, and selling it after building it for 6 months for $300.

Studio typically gets half the box office.

I just watched a few clips on YT. Interesting but not compelling. Where is Jar Jar Binks?

So they're purposefully tanking the film? Highly doubtful. They'd still want to get money internationally and through the hard-copy release.
