Jolida JD 302B impulse buy

today I went to this shop where I bought a used rega planet cd to pick up the remote and walked out with the remote and a jolida jd 302B (it was a trade in, basically new in the box with all the original packing etc, the shop owner which deals almost exclusively in modern tube audio said it had a cap upgrade and all the tubes were upgraded from the stock tubes, I think most of the upgrades were sovteks but he said there were two nos tubes, I am pretty new to tubes so will have to see what is in there). Got a good deal on this considering the upgrades and the new in the box condition

Got it home and immediatley had to listen for awhile, just so nice sounding compared to my solid state stuff. I had been getting myself worked up about getting a tube amplifier and walking in and seeing that beautiful 302b on the counter was basically more than I could stand!

I've been reading threads for a few weeks and just couldn't stand it anymore, I paid $750, I just thought, here is a beautiful tube amp, I should just buy this and make myself happy! (I have heard many people state on this forum not to buy something to just make do, just get it in your mind what you want and wait for it, so after getting it in my mind and waiting a few days I got it!),

this was a luxury splurge for me, while I would like to find some neat vintage amp to restore I just needed to own something that is working properly (now!), I will try to add some pics, my space is pretty tiny so all of you with more spatious digs can stretch your arms out and grunt while looking at the pics!

Sweet find andyp, just wait another 75 hours or so (depending on how many hours the previous person put on the tubes) and it only gets better. That and the Planet. Nice.

a few pics

here are a few shots, I got the rt-707 today, so happy because I had a box of old local jazz club recordings, I have to tackle dealing with all this audio stuff piling up, I like stuff on tables, just not much room to work with (have thought about getting rid of the couch, might do it, just set up a table so I can at least get stuff off the floor!)

The Jolida looks real clean (NICE :thmbsp:) and I really love the sound of the JJs, too (on my MC225). Sweet! Thanks for the pics.

I really love how this amp sounds, I noticed on a few recordings (that I am very familiar with) that the bass was not as detailed as my ss setup (but the jolida is 50wpc as compared to 200 wpc on my ss amp), but overall I love the sound

I have a bunch of old recorded jazz on reels to listen to (someones personal library with detailed notes and in some cases lp release number), I can't wait to listen everyday!

I'm excited about tubes, eventually I would like to get a good tube tester (proabably will try to buy one from a local tech if possible), I pick up a lot of vintage stuff locally and have found boxes of old tubes before (I don't have any right now but know they will come my way, not like they used to though!)

Tube tester? You really got the bug! :D

I've noticed bass is a bit lighter using a 25 WPC tube amp, but I feel it is more realistic in many recordings - and I can't get enough of that awesome midrange! For me, too much bass drowns out other portions of sound. Still, poor recordings (on CD, vinyl, or tape) are really poor, while great recordings are stupendous. It's just that a good tube setup will allow the recording quality to come through as it was originally made.

I'm glad AK got to you and helped you check out tube audio!:thmbsp:

Rock on!:guitar:

replace gt 12ax7's with untested telefunken 12ax7's

Is it unwise to try untested tubes in an amplifier (my jolida has two groove tube 12ax7's but I pulled some telefunken 12ax7's from an old concertone r2r), the amp has two nos phililps 12at7's

In the concertone were

3 telefunken 12ax7
1 rca 12ax7
5 matsushit1 12at7
1 matsushita 6x4
1 matsushita 12bh7a

the concertone was a 505 and was in bad shape so pulled out the tubes, I also had an old telefunken radio with some tubes but besides a hint of the old logo can't make out any lettering,

I can get the tubes tested first if necessary,

I've had tubes blow in my Jolida (some old NOS EL84's -- forgot to re-bias, my bad), and the amp was none the worse for wear. That said, if you have a tester, I would test them first. It would certainly rule out the shorted ones and the ones that were bad to start off with.

thanks for the info, I will have them tested first. I want to get my jolida set up properly with proper cables etc, thanks also for the comments dave, I was listening to some vinyl that I was really familiar with but have to listen again more carefully, I think I also tended to crank a bit on solid state and haven't needed to go more than 50% on the jolida so might try a few more watts just to see. I've been taking apart a mcintosh ma5100 int amp, it is completely nude on my kitchen table, hooked up the rega and ads l470's and it sounds great, now I just have to put it all back together again! has a few lights out, probably will just reassemble for now

by the way dave, I have to say that your avatar pretty much cracks me up, I have to keep looking at your name because I want to call you peter! The expression on the face is how I feel when I get new toys!

Thanks andyp - I chose the avatar exactly for that reason (I feel the same way when 'new toys' just happen to show up in my room!) :D

If I could just figure out what peter would say when he got a new tube amp! I had the telefunken 12ax7's tested, only one in excellent condition, one is ok (tested 85% but the shop owner told me it wasn't something you would want to use, the other was bad), dud, oh well,

The Joilda died, I wasn't in the room but when I got back it was not-working (no pilot, no tubes lit)

Checked for the fuse and realized that there is no fuse, checked the manual and it showed a fuse holder (no holder on the amp, took off the bottom panel and saw no fuses), checked the detailed writing on the power connector and it read "use with...fuse", can't remember the rating but I think it meant use with a fused cord, didn't get that when I bought it, anyway, will take it back and hope that it is not too serious, it was purchased as-is but have only had it a week, I tried the back up tube set but made no difference, anyway, not sure what happened, wasn't driving it very hard, oh well, the worst thing is that I am out my money but actually the worst thing is going back to ss!
