Jumping Bean's NYC dorm room setup

JumpingBean

...but you're one of them
Although I hail from Austin, I actually go to music school in NYC (right across the street from Columbia) and spend 8 months out of the year in a tiny little dorm room.

So even though I have lots of gear back home, I never brought any of it to school with me, since most of what I have is high-watt receivers and large speakers that would get me thrown out of this place faster than a Thorens sells on craigslist.

However, I finally got fed up with itunes and my shitty M-audio monitors and decided to go on the hunt for a dorm room system. After about a week of hunting I have assembled this, which I can say without a doubt sounds pretty damn good. All in all, everything cost me about $275.

The stuff:

Macbook pro w/ Fiio D3 DAC
Technics SL-1300 turntable w/ at95e cart
V
Pioneer SA-6500 II integrated amp
V
Klipsch RB-10 bookshelf speakers
Superlux HD668B headphones

The Technics, all the auto functions restored.

Very nice, and I bet sounds much bigger than it actually is. How do college guys afford Johnny Black?

Generation Records in the Village is my go-to for new records. They carry all the punk and metal that i listen to. For used records (classic rock or classical) I go to Westsider Records on west 72nd because it's close to where I live, but occasionally i will go visit Academy Records.

Haha thanks, I was wondering if someone was going to identify that American Nightmare/GUTG print.

And no, I go to Manhattan School of Music.

Nice. Reminds me of my dorm setup, which was in NYC as well.

Do you attend FCLC?

OT but I graduated from FCLC in 02.
Nice setup. When I was an upper west sider, there was still that HUGE Tower Records a couple blocks away. I miss the days of rummaging through the second floor jazz CD's. I've managed to miss every Flag show, but I did see Black Flag play the Warsaw and it was...interesting?

Legit dorm room setups are tough to tackle and rare to see. I never really champed mine.

More importantly though, nice whiskey.

I've been to both Generation Records and Academy, they seem pretty nice. Have never been to Westsider Records, may have to pay a visit someday.

OT as well. Rose Hill 87 for me.

I lived on West 58th for a few years and remember that Tower well.

dang. wish I had that kind of setup in college. Not had redemption rye but have had buffalo trace. We weren't alowed to have any sort of alcohol in the dorm...unless you had a cool RA ;)

You're allowed to here if you're of age (which I am).

I'm up at 122nd and Broadway. The lovely dividing line between Harlem and Morningside Heights.
