Just found a Fisher 400 - now what speakers?

Try the Local Ham Operator club's. They probably have a few guys who work on gear.

You may end up having to ship it. Packing it RIGHT isn't that hard. But it will need to be double boxed.

I'm in the market for a 400 and wonder how it would match with Infinity RSb's? This won't be the final pairing as the longer range plans might be with some full range Kanspea's and a sub.

Would be OK, I suspect -- I once had a pair of RSb speakers and wasn't a huge fan (they're brighter than I like), but I never tried 'em with a Fisher and, like the Heresy, there might be some synergy for the good.

I know everyone says to use high-efficiency speakers like Klipsch for tubed Fishers, and I have and really like them - Heresys and Quartets... but, have also had them hooked up to AR-3, AR-3a, and Dynaco A-25. I think they're in the low 80s db/m. You have to turn the volume knob up a bit more but the sound will certainly fill a medium size room easily. If you're room is pretty large and you like it loud then go for high-efficiency speakers.

The 25-ish wpc of the 7591 and 7868 pp Fishers will allow the successful use of many different loudspeakers.

I have a Fisher 400 hooked up to a pair of Fisher XP5 speakers, walnut veneer, in a bathroom set-up. Fisher made these two components at the same time and designed them to be connected. The whole system sounds fine.

In the BATHROOM????? How steamy does it get in there when the shower is running? Hopefully it's plugged in to a GFCI Circuit.

While the house was built in 1765, we had this bathroom totally rebuilt in early 2011 and supplied with its own circuitry directly from one of the circuit breaker panels, and a large number of GFCI outlets. We also ran the speaker wires through the area above the ceiling and then through the walls behind the speakers which are mounted on shelves made specifically for the purpose.

In addition to these Fisher components, I put in a Marantz CD-63 player and a Sony HDR F1HD FM/AM HD Tuner, which has a clock and enhanced FM and AM capabilities. Of course, I have a rooftop outdoor antenna connected to the room, with the RG-6 coax run through the walls into a Parts Express two-way coax switch.

I like to listen to fine sounding music while I shave in the morning.

And, no, the shower does not get the room steamy - we have a great extractor fan.

This is the original thread starter and I wanted to say that I traded my 400 for a restored 500c. I also would like to still find a great set of speakers and want to know, from Fisher owners, if using a 4 ohm speaker would be harder on the unit than using an 8 ohm.

Thanks

As long as any 4, 8, or 16 ohm speaker is connected to the correct output tap on the Fisher, the Fisher won't know the difference. That's why the taps are there -- to correctly mate the Fisher to a variety of speaker impedance levels. Doing so maintains the optimum power transfer, distortion characteristics, and damping level for virtually any speaker.

Yes. That's the up-side of transformer-coupled outputs! :-)

... and - although there's a slight difference in claimed output power between the 400 and 500C - in practice I'd opine that they're virtually interchangeable in terms of 'speaker-driving' ability.

I am having an odd thing happen. I changed speakers from Heresy's to Wharfedale W90's and now when I turn off the 500c I get a short burst squeak such as a mike will feedback. This never happened with the Heresy speakers.

Don't really have a good answer but was wondering if your Wharfdales have been recapped? Might be a leaky cap that's discharging after shut-off?

Hopefully, one of the smart guys will chime in.

Nice setup! Where did you get the stand for your receiver? I'm looking for something smallish like that.

I wish I could remember, maybe walmart or target. It had wheels but the Fisher is so heavy it broke one of the wheels.
