Just ordered a "Red Ed" cart!

Ever since first learning about it, I've been very curious about the Ed Saunders "Red Ed" Audio-Technica ESCMG29.

Apparently made by Audio Technica for the past 30 years or so, and rebranded as Goldring Elan, Empire 105 & 205 LT, Sanyo MG-29, Kenwood V51, Fisher 55D, etc., it should be a fun, cheap cart. The stylus on the $13.95 version is conical, but with a smaller tip than usual (6 mil). There is also a more "expensive" ($28.95) version with elliptical stylus - but I couldn't resist ordering the cheap version just to see what $14 will buy.

I'm planning to put it on a Dual 1019. I'll let you all know what I think after I receive it.

Interesting. Because of its similarity to the C51M, I had always assumed it was made by Nagaoka, but maybe AT made the cartridge for them, too. In any event, I've used the Goldring Elan version very satisfactorily on both a Stanton STR8-80 and my LP12 with Ittok arm.

Last time Ed Saunders was in the Atlanta Metro area. I even had a working phone number a few years back. Nice guy!
 
Eagerly watching this thread-I am rebuilding a Dual 1218 for my mother and need a good inexpensive cart to put on it.
 
Ooh, I'll be keeping an eye on this thread.
I just got my first turntable, but it didn't come with a cartridge, ergo I am looking for one on a budget.
Looking forward to the review!
 
This is/was not made by Audio Technica. It's generally known as Sanyo/Fisher, but I'm not sure who actually mfrs it.
 
I can't say who makes it but I have had one on my Dual 1019 for about 6 months and I think it sounds good for 14 bucks

Very cool! While I sit here waiting for my Red Ed to arrive, would you be kind enough to describe what I can expect, ie: strengths and weaknesses, tonal color, etc.?
 
Got 2 Red Ed's coming.

Been meaning to pull the trigger on the " Red Ed" for months. Just ordered both versions to give them a try. Probably order the stylus for the V-15 IV shortly, too.

Cool! Please post your impressions of the conical vs. the elliptical. I was on the fence about which one to get, but my cheapskate tendencies won out!
 
I have one on a BIC 80Z and it sounds very good. Under magnification, the build quality of the stylus looks good too.
