Just picked up a pair of Electro Voice Marquis speakers!

Hi Everyone,
I've been looking for some high sensitity vintage speakers to use with a ASL Wave 8 for a while now and after a couple of attempt, I finally found a set. As noted in the title they Electro Voice Marquis speakers manufactured in the ealy sixties. The cabinets are in wonderful condition and I can't believe haw great they sound. The gentleman that I purchased them from, Ken,was a really nice guy. He set up an area to audition speakers with an Eico integrated amplifier and a CD player. An audiophile friend of Ken's, Frank, was there and he offer to bring over a couple of RCA mono amps to try the speakers out with. As it turns out Frank had updated the cross over caps in the speakers, the Eico amp and the RCA amps he brought over. I can't say enough things about these guys. But I digress, back to the speakers. Ken started playing some tracks featuring vocals. I new right away that these speakers had to come home home with me. They were able to produce that warm, lush sound that I've been missing for so long. Don't get me wrong I still love my Thiels and B&K, but this setup just produces a different sound. Frank ran home briefly to retrieve a couple RCA mono amps. He hooked them up and the sound was even better. If he's willing to part with them, I may have to make another road trip to fetch those too. Ken and Frank helped load up my new toys in the car and I headed home. This was a great Craiglist purchase experience!

I made the return trip home and I've listened to the speakers on the ASL Wave 8s for about hour or so now and I think the RCA monos may have bested them. The RCA's seem a little smoother and a little stronger on the bottom end. They have been recapped and modified and the Wave 8's are stock. They could use the same treatment then do a side by side test to see which comes out on top. Well, that's my excitement for today. Time to enjoy some more tunes.

There is something about vintage EVs when coupled with good tube amps that is just magical. Rich, lush, 3 dimensional, eerily lifelike. Proceed with caution. This can be habit forming. Don't ask.
I couldn't agree more. You've nailed the description of their sound. For me, there something that is just so special about the sound creates when the right pieces are put together.

Why is it when someone tells me not to ask about something audio related, I somehow feel hopelessly compelled to ask? So macyjrm, how did you come to the realization that it could be habbit forming? ;)

I love EV speakers. My 1st real speakers were a pair of home made 5-1/2 cu ft boxes similar to those beauties my Dad helped me build back in the 70's. They had sp12Bs and T35s to start then added 8HD horns and 1828R drivers later. I've had home brew EV speakers pretty much ever since. JOHN

I came to that realization when I unexpectedly acquired a pair of Georgians. Once I saw the quality inside, I knew this generation EV stuff was not built on the cheap. I also have since picked up a nice pair of Aristocrats. I have way too much stuff, but more EVs are welcome here.

@macyjrm The Georgians look amazing! I hope I get to hear a set one day. I'm going to need to work on my will power in the interim.

What I find attractive is that the bass goes low enough without booming. I have some sort of E-V cabinet with 12" coaxial Wolverines inside. The cabinet is solid wood with no internal stuffing. You'd think the bass would be terrible and resonant, but no, it actually is balanced. If only the horns weren't aimed at my ankles....

I was a bit surprised by the bass output. With large internal volume of the cabinet and the large slot port and just the small amount of damping material around the periphery of the cabinet, I suspected that the bass would have been somewhat wooly. To my surprise, the bass was tight. I wondered about placement the horns relative to my seating position. They are considerably lower than ear level when seated but they still sound quite good. I may toy with tilting the cabinets back just to see what affect that might have.

Is there a difference in crossovers between Marquis and Aristocrat. Could I use Marquis crossover in Aristocrat. Them seem to have same drivers
