keeping another pair of QLS1's alive

I see. I don't think I had gotten that far back yet. But I admit I was enjoying the pictures of the QLS-1s and their insides for the most part.

Has the site changed? It popped up in an overlay that greyed the background.

One month + and I've finally finished new cabinet bases for my QLS's. One installed and one to go. Birch ply in place of the particle board used originally. The originals must've spent many years in a wet basement before they came to me. Veneered with book matched wood-on-wood walnut veneer and contact cement. I failed to notice that the grain ran left to right on top but think I like the new alignment better. Need a few coats of Old English for Dark wood to match the color. Found the perfect feet at the local Home Depot, 1 5/8" diameter and 3/8" high. I used Minwax English Chestnut 233 stain which is close, though my pair seems much darker than most other pairs I've seen pictures of here. No loss of bass response from the one on feet. I did add poly-fill to the new lower section around the crossover and behind the woofer.

guys, i'm a little sad. my QLS1's are departing tomorrow for their new home in Vegas!

would have loved to keep them AND the 1b's but it wasn't in the cards. have to support the hobby somehow. plus, restoring them was so much fun that i'd love to do it again if another pair ever falls into my lap.

guys, if you haven't reworked the XO's in your QLS1's, you are really missing out. it might seem daunting at first, but it's really not bad once you start get your hands dirty. i am willing to help anyone with pretty much anything, including coming up with parts lists. can't remember if i posted mine here or not... :scratch2:

Onward and forward. It is too bad that you couldn't keep both. I'm sure the 1b's are superior however the challenges of running the 1b's are part of the fun and wonderment of "going large" and the QLS 1's will always have a place in your audio soul....who knows you might become reaquainted once again

good job on those cabs, jim!

Thanks Chris, if you hadn't gone first with your xo rebuild I doubt I'd have found out how enjoyable this project could be.

I've been following your RS-1B thread with interest too. Quite an order of magnitude farther down the path towards your own audio nirvana I suspect.

I'm sorry to see your Q's go too, but I'm sure you take pride in knowing that you've saved another pair that can be appreciated for a generation.:thmbsp:

I'm sure you could help others along by posting your parts list (don't remember seeing it as a list) and how you laid out the network. Maybe as a new thread? Did all of your spares go with the Q's? I'm still on the hunt for several 5 ohm 25 watt pots.

yeah, the 1b's certainly have more potential (not sure yet if "order of magnitude" is true), but one has to have a little more patience with those. maybe with a recap i'll unlock a similar boost in performance as with the QLS1's! the cost would be much higher though since i'd use Auricaps.

i think i posted the QLS1 part list in my DIY thread :scratch2: jim, i'll PM you later about those pots.

I got my QLS1’s last June 2020. Got them in north Seattle/Ballard at a little hi-fi shop called “Turntables & Trails” ( the Trails part is he sells second hand hiking gear as well I.e. Jan sport, REI, north face etc.). Paid $1500. Spotless not a Mark anywhere and all rosewood. Crossovers had been redone by seller on consignment there. I took both woofers out and sent to Watkins to have both voice coils replaced and in doing so they also were refoamed obviously. I have been reading that repacking the insulation in them is something to pay attention to ( I didn’t. I just put the stuffing back in after I got the woofers back). I hear Nudell stuffed in varying densities, I didn’t, I wasn’t aware and just stuffed it back the way I found it. Basically not compressing the bleached stuffing just loosely putting it all back in the way I found it. The stuffing was throughout the bottom/base covering xovers and pots, went as high as about 6-7” above where woofer is. The stuffing is also pretty much up against the back of woofer ( when remounting woofers the stuffing is enough where it’s touching magnets and back woofer frame). The stuffing throughout is not layered in any density configuration, pretty much evenly packed but I didn’t compress any of it when I put it back in. Anyone have any experience with said operation? I’m driving uppers with a bridged 450 watt per ch. h/k citation 7.1, and pushing the Watkins woofer with a emotive xpr 5 amp - 600 watt per. Preamp is a Proceed avp2. They sound Incredible.

Very nice.
I have always wondered about the amount of "stuffing" in my QLS-1's.
Too much or too little?
The saying goes, the more filler somehow increases the volume the woofer sees.
Bass frequency lowers, however maybe at the expense of sound quality:dunno:

Do yours appear to have about the same amount of stuffing as I have described in mine?

those look nice! i still miss my pair.

as i recall, the bass of mine was stuff pretty heavily, with less behind the woofer and above. i don't think it went all the way up the speaker, but i did add some more where there was none and i don't think it hurt (of course i made way too many changes at once to parse what did what).

Cool. One thing is for sure- if you leave too much open air behind the Watkins, it will bottom out against back frame.

I replaced what polyester fill that came out when I recapped the crossovers.
Just evenly distribute what's there.
It would be nice to know how many ounces were used to obtain proper tuning.

Not that, caps like that don’t always measure like whats printed on them...I’ve tested cheap 200uf caps and they read 220, etc...I would test those to see if the person actually tested them or just took for granted they are what’s printed...since you have them apart...

if you didn’t have them apart then I wouldn’t tear it all up again...
