Kenwood 700C Nudies

I would have sent the 700C first. You will be surprised when the 700C comes back.
More so because the 700M(modded)will already be in your system.

EW has had my 700M a week now and I can't wait, so I will have to take a chill pill because it will be a while. LOL I am going to take him my 700C when he is ready for it. It's hard to believe that a 700C could sound that much better than it does already. Again I can't wait to have both modded pieces hooked up and playng, should be rocket ship. :music:
epoch5: It might be worthwhile to get the missing internal covers fabricated for your 700M. I imagine you are looking for that last bit of performance and the covers are meant for shielding. Ask EW if this is worthwhile...

Epoch 5,
Can you tell us what you are using in place of the 700M,and how taking the 700M out of the system affected the sound?:scratch2:
Thanks.

Thanks for the tip. I can make that myself once I get it back from EW I assume it is made of aluminum?

OK, here is the chain of events. When the 700M arrived I took it almost straight to EW. A few days later the 700C arrived, so I have never had them hooked together. The 700c is currently hooked to the main IN on a Kenwood KR-5150. So I have never heard either piece playing to it's full potential. I can tell compared to other equipment I have owned that they are extraordinary. (I have played both through the IN and the OUT on the 5150)
So you see my anticipation is quite high. I assume when EW is ready to start on my 700M he will have me bring the 700C up and do them together, so I think the first time I hear them connected together they will both be modded.:yippy:

I think it is sheet metal. When it is time, I'll get you some dimensions. Just remind me...

That will be an awesome day! What speakers are planning to use? I've got NS-1000M's running with my 700M/C. IMO, an excellent combo.

Right now I have 4 JBL L100's. But open to suggestions:music:

I tried different brands and sizes with the Kennies before I settled on the NS-1000M's. I found the 700's to be so transparent that the character of the speakers came out either exposing strengths or weaknesses. Of course, I always set tone controls to neutral or defeat. It was fun auditioning the different speakers I have and it is a process I am sure you will enjoy.

As far as listening to it, I've been doing so since last night.
It has no sound of its own, really.
Very very neutral, which was the goal of the original engineers when they designed it, and mine as well when restoring it.

Dear Sir,
are your listening impression referring to the line stage, the phono stage or both ?
Just a last kind question on the circuit.
When listening with a CD player, and with the tone controls by-passed, the signal passes the pot and the buffer amp only ?
By the way I found extremely interesting and even worrying to know that there are units designed about 30 years ago (?) that beat hands down more modern units.
I am perplexed at idea that this unit can be a modern high-end unit let's say from Mark Levinson.

Thank you very much again.
Kind regards,

beppe

Basically the line stage.
Just a last kind question on the circuit.

The signal passes through several other boards regardless of switch or knob position, but I will decline to look them up specifically at the moment.

The only reason this should worry you is if you have convinced yourself that newer and more expensive MUST mean 'better'. This is not always the case, but I have no Mark Levinson gear to do a comparison. Perhaps if someone wants to send me some megabuck gear, I'll render an opinion.

The state of analog audio circuit design in the mid to late 70's was not as primitive as one might expect. While there are been some interesting circuits built since then, most are derivations of designs that have been around for 40 years or more.

Thank you very much indeed Mr Echowars for the kind and valuable reply.
Your words confirm some of my feelings.
More modern units are only too complex (and I would say unnecessarily so) and of course much more expensive.
The best designs of mid 70's are elegantly simply (in line with the famous KISS principle) and, as the reviews confirm, can give extremely good sound.
After all I think that the only debatable issue remains that of the presence of tone controls, most of times by-passable anyway.:scratch2:

Thank you very much indeed.
Kindest regards,:D

Having just finshed another listening session with this preamp,I can honestly say that familiarity is breeding respect rather than contempt.
I'd love for someone to send EW their megabuck component for comparison since we almost have the same preamp.
Adding this pre to my system has been the biggest single improvement, the improvement which has moved the sound of the rest of the system further toward "no further improvement forseeable",than anything anything I've heard since '77.
Probably the best purchasing decision I will ever make.

Although a few boards on the 700C pass the signal along regardless of switch position, the tone controls and the tone board are completely bypassed by using the proper position of the front panel switches.

The ability to bypass tone controls is one small mark of what can distinguish a cheap unit from a mid-line unit. Any piece of hi-fi gear with tone controls that does not allow the ability to completely bypass them cannot in any way be considered a high-end unit. Certainly the designers of the 700C had this as an early requirement.

Good morning Steve,
Your words leave no doubt abut how exceptional is this preamp.
"no further improvement forseeable"
Thanks again and kind regards,

I find tone controls an unnecessary complication as well :scratch2:

Hello EchoWars!

I found again your nudies to the 700C here and saw that you although canged the power supply cabs. I found a company here in germany who can organize me these cabs.

"The stock power supply caps are 2200µf 80V, and as you can see I have replaced them with some computer-grade Cornell Dubilier 4700µf 75V caps."

To get the right one they need a CDE Part-Nr.
Do you think you can give me this Nummer?

Would be great.

Eckart/Pakko

I got your PM, but I'll answer here too:

I have sourced three different power supply caps that would work...
-United Chemi-Con 3300µf 100V #36DA332F100AM2A
Newark 95F4471 1.375”x 2.625”
-CDE 5300µf 75V #DCMC532U075AA2B
Newark 59K0158 1.375” x 2.125”
- CDE 4700 75V #DCM472U075AH2B
Newark 59K0184 1.375” x 2.625”

The last one (4700µf 75V) is the one that I have been using. The stock cap is installed with wirewrap, and these new ones are screw terminal, so a ring terminal needs to be installed on the wires. This is easy on the positive and negative wires, but the two ground connections are only about 2cm long and tricky to get the ring terminal installed onto.

Here's the finished deal...terminals are non-insulated, and crimped and then soldered. The positive and negative terminals are shrink-wrapped.
