Kenwood 'control amplifier' troubles

I know this is an old thread, but he is right. I had one of these for a short time in 1990. The remote controls the volume independantly of the knob on the front. If the remote-controlled volume is turned down, you will get nothing out of it, regardless of where the volume knob is. Pretty stupid design.

Regarding the Kenwood Control amplifier KM-206, i know that you must have the remote control to turn the electronic pre-set volume all the way up, and leave it set that way....then you no longer need the remote to operate the km-206 volume control.. With the remote control volume set high, manual volume control will now work....as usual...if remote control has been used to turn down the volume... no sound will come out hope this helps..
 
Wow! Interesting old thread here! I got a KC-105 next to the computer that I run a turntable & cassette deck through. I'm glad it doesn't have that issue because I don't have a remote for it either. I don't know if it could work that way but now I got to worry about somebody with a remote coming by and turning my volume off!

No worries Dan. No remote functions on KC-105. These were the first of the "rack" control amps, and used a seperate remote component, the RC-95.;)
 
I just bought a KM-206 system and had issues. I was able to use my harmony remote to get the volume up. Have to say the linear tracking table sucked but the rest was good
 
I know this is an old thread but it helped me.

Yes I was trying to solve my issue when I stumbled onto this thread. It led me in the right direction. Once I got the remote programmed I still had a problem though. Turned out to be a bad rca cable. I got the whole system off of craigslist for 90 bucks including the glass front cabinet. I ditched the turn table though since it was just not very good sounding and the linear tracking arm was having problems with sticking.

Why would they not put a headphone jack on this unit ? I have no remote for mine and am having the same probs. Was this designed this way to just piss people off ????????
 
Sounds like the "remote" volume is set all the way down, which means the "manual" volume on the front panel won't do anything. You can use one of those big silver Comcast universal remotes to turn the "remote" volume all the way up, then you can just use it as normal. I suggest you contact Chris who's username is "gunpoet". I sold him one of these preamps together with a Comcast remote control, maybe he still has the piece of paper that shows the correct code to program the remote.

Here's your solution: I used my comcast remote, programed the AUX button w/ #30027, now you can turn up the volumn, and now you have a nice "working" pre-amp. Actually I have a Basic C-1, and a C-2, and a KC-206, and I can't tell the difference.

Resurrecting this old thread. I've found two universal remotes and neither would work with my Kenwood kc-206. I see remotes all the time in thrift stores. Is there a particular one I should look for? I haven't seen a comcast one yet.
 
Answering my own question. Found a RadioShack 4 in 1 "light-up" remote for $2 at a TS and programmed it with #027, and now everything finally works.

Just wanted to clarify, for anyone trying to use a Harmony remote. I just tried to use my Harmony 650 remote with the KC-206. If you program the remote for "Kenwood KC-206", the remote will not control the preamp. You MUST program the remote for "Kenwood KM-206" and everything will work properly. Hope this helps someone in the future.:thumbsup:

it is RC-206 and this system only wants RC-70 so...................... I just ordered an e-bay special for 25.95 shipped

Hope the remote works out for you. The KM-106 is probably the best part of the package. It is a reliable work horse that I use daily in my main system. If it doesn't sound up to snuff, you may want to try a different preamp. I think the KC-206 does better than other Kenwood preamps sold in these rack systems. I like the fact that you can plug the amp into the preamp for power. It was nice to be able to shut everything down by remote. Enjoy!
