Just wanted to clarify, for anyone trying to use a Harmony remote. I just tried to use my Harmony 650 remote with the KC-206. If you program the remote for "Kenwood KC-206", the remote will not control the preamp. You MUST program the remote for "Kenwood KM-206" and everything will work properly. Hope this helps someone in the future.
AWESOME.. thanks. I just picked up the KC-206 and KM-206 and it did not have the remote. It does not have the "volume" problem... BUT I wanted to have a remote that could fix the issue if it came up. And I have a Harmony remote. As you said the KC-206 setup did NOT work... BUT programming it to the KM-206 worked PERFECTLY. Thanks for your input. Again AWESOME!
Please tell us how you hot-wired the remote control volume portion I would love to know. Thanks
I didn't really take notes. Basically if you follow the traces from the volume control you'll find where they go into a chip. Out of the chip it goes to the rest of the unit. The chip is what does remote volume control and balance.

by the block diagram you can see output of the volume control (VR1) goes to IC4, which is the balance and electronic volume control, then out to the line amp.
Looks like jumping pin 1 to 3 and pin 14 to 16 is what I did.

Wow, I know I'm bumping an old thread, but thanks for the info. Especially the part about turning the volume all the way up with the remote then working the volume knob on the pre-amp.
I have a rack with the pre-amp, equalizer, tape deck, TT, and power amp. I couldn't get a blip of sound. I actually have the remote, and I'd turn up the volume on the remote to like halfway to 3/4, and nothing. I was nervous to go too high b/c I didn't want to mess up my speakers. My power amp lights would only light up the center bar, nothing on the sides. I've messed with this thing for 3 days checking wiring. Was about to chalk it up as a bad pre-amp or power amp and sell it off until I found this post.
I unhooked the speakers, went in there and turned the volume up all the way, then the knob on the preamp to about a 1/4 and could see the lights on the power amp moving. Hooked up the speakers and out comes sound. Success!!!

I can say after messing around with this stuff, I wouldn't invest a penny into it. Real finicky, and just works when it wants.
I had everything working last week. Got some new speakers and a turntable. Figured I'd test them out before undoing everything from my main system. Didn't undo anything other than speakers first time. Nothing. Double check everything, nothing. Third time I unhook speakers, get everything going, and finally starts playing sound. Turn off power amp and hook up other speaker. Nothing. Turn power amp back off and go back to other speaker. Works fine. Try other speaker again, works fine. Go back to previously working speaker, nothing.
You can hear when the power amp finally kicks on and music flows. Prior to that, zero noise. Power amp lights are on, but just seems like sometimes it wants to put sound to the speakers, other times it doesn't. That kills this entire setup b/c without power amp, you can't hook up speakers. Not sure what in the power amp is misfiring, but it's very hit or miss.

Hey there… been along time since u posted about buying a Radio Shack remote at a TS. I need a remote that will work with my KC 206 Pre Amp. Any suggestions? What radio shack remote did you find/use that works? Thx much.
