Sanity test when replacing transistors. The collector in nearly all Japanese transistors is the center lead. So you can use that and your DMM (diode test) to determine the base. Sometimes there are mistakes in spec sheets... I always check and usual put a small kink in the base lead. Takes about 10 seconds and creates peace of mind.
As Craig said in post 15 - you probably have an output problem that shows up when putting out current (load or speaker). Possible cause could be connections to collectors of output transistors, or could be bad solder or broken trace between drivers and outputs. One way to check is to use your scope. With load, the distortion is usually the top or bottom part of the wave form clipped.
