Hi, just wondering how much a fully restored Kenwood model 600 is worth its in excellent condition and obviously full working.

Thanks

You'd need to define 'fully restored'. Seems to be a lot of varying opinions on what that means.

A decent unrestored-but-functional 600 in very good cosmetic shape should sell for around $500. A full restoration (MY definition of the word, which means a buttload of work done to it) ought to cost close to that amount again. But understand that some sellers polish the faceplate and shoot some RatShack cleaner into the switches and call it 'restored'.

restored to the information you gave: me new transistors including new outputs as one of the original's was blown (replaced with the 25mhz st parts)/resistors where needed all recapped adjusted, bench tested and lastly a new speaker panel and binding posts as some originals were missing, your welcome to the original speaker posts for the cost of postage if you want?

I think this covers fully restored?, but i could be wrong.

If I were the prospective buyer, I'd want a parts list, and the name and qualifications of the tech as well.

A less than proper restoration could decrease the value in my mind.

If I were the prospective owner, the only person I would want to carry out the restoration would be EchoWars. He rebuilt my 700m and 700c and is an expert on all things Kenwood Supreme. :thmbsp:

Well....... he almost did he gave me most of the details on how and what to restore on this the rest was mined from his various posts on the forum, the information he gave me was in confidence (and will stay that way) as i'm in the UK. Parts list will be available and offered fwiw. Qualifications wise is used to repair tv's switchmodes etc but that was 6-7 years ago hence some of the ridiculous questions i ask sometimes

I wasn't encouraging you to openly publish the details... merely suggesting that there could be a wide variation of results depending on who is doing the work, and what parts are used... and the value would be reflected accordingly.

I have firsthand experience with Glenn's work, so I can appreciate the value, and would gladly pay a premium for a unit that he had "restored", but I would be considerably more skeptical of restoration claims from techs that I have no prior experience with.

OK...then the obvious question ought to be asked...how much is he asking for the unit?

I find this a little harsh, everyone fixing/restoring audio gear has to start somewhere even Glenn/EchoWars, Poo Pooing someone elses work because you have'nt had firsthand experience with them is wrong in my opinion, with this particular restoration no its not going to be up with Glenns 'standard' as he has many more years experience than myself, BUT is not going to be crap as you suggest the parts are of a high standard probably most of which Glenn uses himself.

So with the greatest respect apart from experience what would be the difference between a restoration of Glenns and a restoration by myself if the same parts are replaced/used and all specs are the same or better when restored than stated in the service manual?

I would also like to offer the parts list to yourself to see if you 'approve' that this is indeed a 'restoration' in your eyes.

Glenn, i don't know what to ask or expect to get out of this unit hence why i asked the question in the first place, i have done my reasearch through ebay and google but the ones i find as you would expect are as original.

I don't think anyone including myself knew that you did the restoration nor implied that the job wasn't up to snuff only that since everyones idea of restored is different and that if you were the buyer that you should ask what the restoration included is all nothing more or less.

I totally agree with the above restorations vary and so do'es the quality of work, this is something i pride myself in and am always striving to better it, i still have a lot to learn knowledge wise but its getting there slowly as my passion lies with vinatge and there isn't much of a scene in the UK.

Sorry.. not trying to be harsh.. just pointing out that there may be a strong correlation between the reputation of the restorer, and the perceived value of the restored item.

Secondly, if this is a unit you restored with specific intent to resell, I would think you would have a selling price (or at least an asking price) in mind to justify the investment of time and materials.

It's not my place (nor my intent) to approve, or disapprove of your work.

No one is poo-pooing your work, and this is the first hint in the thread that this is something you yourself restored (I admit that I did not draw a correlation between the thread where you were asking Q's about the 600 and this thread till now...I answer so many threads that this one just slipped right by me. Sorry!)

Most of the 600's that show up here that have been worked on by someone else have been hacked to one degree or another, mainly because the 600 is not exactly an easy unit to tackle...something you know since you just did it. To do it properly is a real PITA and most techs just don't have the patience. Thus, when someone pops up with a 'restored' 600, my knee-jerk reaction is "Uh huh, sure..." ;)

From our correspondence, it sounds like you have done good work (as long as you left all the original wire-wrap alone and accessed the driver boards by removing the heatsink). But it's really difficult for us in the US to get a handle on what a piece might sell for in the UK, as we don't have a good feeling for the increase in value that a unit carries over there.

I bought this TRIO Model 600 of Chris just over a week ago when it was for sale on Ebay UK,i made an offer of £800 UK pounds which was accepted. It has arrived safely today and i've just got to say that i'm over the moon with it...It sounds excellent, quite similar to my restored Trio KA-907 although maybe a tad more smoother/relaxing,will do more listening comparisons later.

Over here in the UK the TRIO Model 600's are mega rare, far rarer than the TRIO KA-907's.
The engineering/build quality on this 600 is even better than on the KA-907.
Anyway thanks to Chris and also EchoWars who helped restore this beautiful amp.
