Kind'a trivia question: what receiver is this?

I found it on the sleeve inside John Lennon LP. Can someone recognize what receiver is on the shelf?

Sorry for the quality of these pics, the print itself is no good too.
BTW, I do not know the answer...

Looks like a Sony STR-60xx series receiver. Tuning knob looks a little flatter than what I remember but the layout, the switch's hats are the giveaways for me. What's the copyright on the LP? That would help confirm/deny the diagnosis.

Cheers,

David

Sony STR 6200F I think, the best receiver Sony ever made in my book. Wish I still had mine.

The year for the LP was '79-'80, so I'd assume the picture was late '78/early '79, and probably-taken in that hotel he was living at in NYC (I always forget the name of that place - Yoko probably-took the picture).

After seeing that wild custom rig he had in the earlier years (if I remember correctly), I was kinda' shocked to see him using a plain old Sony receiver. However, even Sony made a lot of great receivers in the '70's.

I love the design of those Sony units. It has such a classic "old" look, without being ugly, which is rare.

Nothing shocking about his selection. Those old Sonys 6060F, 6120 and 6200 were marketed towards McIntosh fans. They were noted for their extraordinary build quality, excellent tuners (five gangs completely shielded) phonos and head phones.

That series of receiver from Sony was competitive to even McIntosh MAC receivers. My 6200 I once owned in several ways was superior, especially so in the tuner section and in power output and in build quality. Nothing inferior on one of those at all. TOTL in every way.

Very interesting.....I saw John Lennon at Klien's (audio Dept.) of Westport, CT. in 1979. Klien's was a very cool place which sold tons of Sony and was one hour from NYC. I myself bought my Sony system there in 1978 - Sony STR2800, PS-1100 turntable & Sony speakers. (cheapo system-I was 17 years old). Westport was a place where well to do entertainers would go, performing arts, etc.

Bob who ran the audio department was one great guy...always had his pipe in mouth so your eyes burned a bit as you looked at the gear. The good old days when you bought stereos at indepentant shops. Gone today like all the geat shops are.....
