They look like the speakers that were being made at the very end of the time that Singer owned KLH. The woofer looks like the "classic" ones except for being painted black but the tweeter and mid are more like the later ones.

Hard to tell from your photos but it looks like one of the last of the Seventeen family, called the Model 317 as I recall, but in a 3-way version. The tweeter would have been moved to the upper right and the mid located where the tweeter once was.

Tell us how they sound.

John

cleaned and tested the speakes. all drivers are working fine. the sound is very similar to the six. i have the six and had the 17,and it is much closer to the six. so even at this late time period in the klh line,it still has the kloss sound.

I acquired a pair of KLH 353 which are from the same series which included the
317, 331, 353, 363, and 373. - I've got no complaints. They hold their own sonically to the earlier "KLOSS" designed models for the most part. - more of a utility style cabinet ( vinyl covered) but they sound good. same woofer design HEAVY paper cone with reverse mounted treated cloth surrounds.

They're not winning any beauty prizes ( particularly with their grills on). Most would have written then off as Post Kloss JUNK KLH's but that's far from the case. I'm really surprised how little information there is on this line. just a few random bits , and even fewer, if any, photos, and most of the commentary seems more focus on the fact that Kloss had already moved on. - Note: He also wasn't involved in the designs of the Cambridge Soundworks Newton series and yet quite a few of those models are great sounding speakers.

In regards to this line of KLH speakers ( the last of the Singer made KLH's based on early replies) They were apparently still using Henry Kloss' Secret sauce and don't sound far removed from the "CLASSIC KLH" family.

Totally worth picking up and giving a listen if you happen upon a set. I almost passed them up for Bastard speakers bearing the KLH name but , I was clearly wrong and I'm pleasantly surprised with how good they sound. I'll try to get some pics up later.

I found a pair of 317's last weekend at a thrift store. B+ condition, A+ sound. Indeed, when I went to search on them -- very little info available. These are wolfs in sheep's clothing indeed.

Apparently the pair I found was one of two designs -- a later version was ported. Mine are the bass reflex design. :)

If you find a pair of 3XX series KLH's...do not dismiss them!

I saw a pair of those at an estate sale last weekend, but passed on them. I have a pair of 22/24's but I don't listen to them very much. . .sound sort of muddy and boxy. I realize they're smaller, but. . .eh, I can't bring in another pair either without incurring some minor wrath.

The tweeter looks the same as the one used in the KLH 101's I bought at Tech Hi-Fi c.1976 or 77 - a model I've never really seen or heard anything else about, BTW. The 101's were 2 ways with - gosh it's been a long time - either 6 or 8 inch woofers, vinyl clad cabinets, sounded pretty darned good.

I think you mean that they're acoustic suspension design. The ported type is bass reflex. :)

Again, nothing too pretty but apparently a real sleeper. - I'll give them a bit more play time and then move on... These are some of the better oddball ( lesser discussed or hard to find info on) speakers I've come into possession of, the others include ( Tangent Acoustics SPL-5, Audio Analyst, RDL Acoustics S-1, JPW Gold Monitor , NHT Pro A-10, Acoustic Energy Aegis One, EPI M-50, 202, 201 , and a random Canton model that I can't recall at the moment, just to name a few.

Those tweeters have a Peerless look to them, and possibly the mids too.

I'll see about pulling a mid and tweeter to see if there's a name and /or model number. The more I listen, the more respect I have for them.
