KLH Model 5 assistance

Looking at picking up a pair of model 5s, but one has a replaced woofer, so I'd need to get an original to replace it. Anyone have a spare, or how hard are these to find? As I understand it, models 5, 12, 23 had the same 12" woofer, but only saw one sold listing on e-bay from back in April.

Does this look like it could be replaced, or did the owner do damage here?

Is this a reflection, or are the two mid-ranges on this one different?

Grilles look ok, cabinets will need refinishing if I purchase.

Don't know what the other 5 of that pair looks like. This is what mine look like. Your pic, IMO, is a wrong replacement woofer. Surrounds were cloth, not foam. Center dust cap is cloth. Both surrounds and dust caps should have a light coat of special dope to seal against air flow. "Roy's formula" gets a lot of thumbs up on AK.

There is a lot of info at www.Theclassicspeakerpages.net site. Hope I wrote that correctly. Sorry see already posted.

I've seen mids with both black and silver plates. I don't know if black was an equal replacement. When I bought mine, I was missing 2 mids. I bought a lot of 4 replacements. And have 2 spares.

Overall these are in decent shape, and worth restoring. The mids look fine, though the surrounds need resealing along with the original woofer and dust cap in the other cab. Find a correct woofer, reseal the surround and dust cap and you will be highly rewarded!

Depending on what you're paying for the incomplete speakers, it's definitely worth purchasing and pursuing the woofer. The woofers pop up on eBay now and then. The 23 woofer is a match and perhaps the 12 as well, I don't recall.
That second number on the cone is the weight of the cone in grams, I believe.

I think the Model Twelve woofer is different, something about the magnet. Never seen one though.
OK, well noted.

OK, yeah, I knew about the numbers on the cones. Is it correct that these should be as close together on a pair as possible for good match of SQ? Seems like some pairs I've seen are different by 2 or 3 grams.

Yes, there are generic replacements out there, but I would think they would not sound the same as the originals.

Thanks for the link to the discussion page.

You are so correct. They won't sound the same. I just posted in another thread that I had a pair of AR 8" woofer reconed. It ruined them. No AR bass at all.

If it were me:
If there were a handful of woofers to choose from, I'd try to get a pair closely matching. However, I wouldn't pass up a single if it was off a couple of grams either way. I suspect I wouldn't be able to tell a difference between the two woofers.

Offer $100 for the woofers and tweeters, likely that they will accept. The tweeters should have one thicker magnet plate, if not, then they are not correct for 5, 12, or 23 models. You need a view from the side of the tweeters to see it.
