KLH Model 5 crossover help !!!

weater:

I have two pair of KLH 17 speakers at home.
One pair was already recapped & refurbished when I bought them.
The second pair was a $30 thrift find.
I recapped that pair with Dayton Poly caps (made by Bennic) that I purchased at Parts Express.....similar to Solen caps but cheaper.
I used Aileene's Fabric Fusion (a flexible fabric cement) to reseal the woofers.
This product can be purchased at almost any fabric shop.....it's cheap and works great.
You put this product on VERY thinly (I used my finger...and finger nail to scape off any excess)....it dries clear in 2-4 hours.
Good luck!!

Steve

I currently own KLH: fours, fives, sixes, & seventeens. All have been in storage for about 15/20 years. I would like to refurbish them all kinda production line.

Can you guys tell me where you have been buying your caps? Is Solen the only/best way to go?

What about instructions & product for doping the woofers.
Should I arbitrarily re-dope all of them, or only the ones that rebound too quickly. How thick? How wide? What should I apply it with? In a service bulletin from KLH about 1970, they recommended a 1" paint brush.

It sounds like the product that was originally used is no longer available. Various speaker re-builders have recommended Elmer's Rubber Cement (just a paper thin coating) or Aleene's Tacky Glue (available @ Michael's craft stores or art supply shops). It all sounds a little too scary to me!

Also have 2# open coil mid-ranges from my FIVEs. They were also used in ELEVENS, TWELVES, & FIFTEENS. Also used as a full range in 8 & 21 table radios. Anybody want to sell them to me? What about having my blown out ones rebuilt? Would this be a better way to go?

There seems to be very little information on FOURs. Anyone have any? There doesn't appear to be any way to service these.?

Plz help,
Weater

Hey Weater - sounds like we both have a KLH problem . . or addiction :D

I've got a single 4 (MINT), 5's, 6's, 7's, 12, 14's, 19's, 24's, 32's . . . just gotta find me some nine's :thmbsp: I made open baffle line arrays from those great 4.5 inch fullrangers you speak of - probabaly my favorite raw driver . . .

getting your model 5 mids rebuilt will be pretty much impossible, but they pop up on ebay all the time . . . as for the fours, they are that lovely early variety KLH where everything's epoxied together - no way in without a sawzawl (or dynamite!)

shoot me a PM :thmbsp:

Hi Guys,
I'm just starting out on a KLH Model Five rebuild. Here is what I'm finding out. 1) Dope the surrounds on low and mid. Seal the wire holes in the mid box. 2) There seems to be fair amount of production variation in the crossover components/drivers and some production build design revisions. Check your actual XO build compared to what you read on the web. Your mileage may vary! Measure the actual driver impedance Re of all your drivers. This crossover employs Zobel networks and the driver Re and Le will effect the Zobel component values as compared to nominal design targets used years ago. I have a 20 page Powerpoint going. Some tweaking may be required, perhaps you may sort your caps and resistors to optimize L/R balance for each driver circuit for example. 3) Additionally, I added new solder lugs to eliminate the corroded legacy terminal strip grounds as well as up-gauging the AWG for the wires (Woofer) and improving the haphazard point to point wiring with organized routes. I will replaced all the crimped "push-ons" with new and soldered. The build quality on my XOs was terrible and needed a significant amount of TLC. More later...
