KLH model Five or Dynaco A-25

Hello all!

I have a guy coming over today who is interested in buying my Dynaco A-25, KLH Five and EPI 120V.

I want to keep either the KLH or Dynaco. Which of the two would you keep? The Fives have been recapped. Dynaco's have never been opened.

The Fives were in crap shape when I found them. Brought the cabinets back to VG condition and recapped and the A-25's are close to perfect untouched condition.

Please help!

I haven't heard any of these speakers, but I'm betting the overwhelming consensus will be to keep the A-25's. They seem to be an AK favorite.
 
Keep the ones that sound best to you! KLH 5's are a marvelous speaker, but may be an acquired taste to some because of their rolled-off highs. The A-25's are generally pleasing to most everyone and truly wonderful in their simplicity. I don't have 5's, but do have KLH 6's, 17's, 23's and a pair of A-25's. I'd really be hard pressed to chose to keep a pair of KLH's or the Dynaco's. I like them almost equally depending upon the program material. I prefer the KLH's for jazz and acoustic stuff, but the Dynaco's for most everything else. Given similar cosmetic condition, the 5's are certainly the more attractive of the 2. Tough choice indeed, but also remember that you are more likely to find another pair of Dynaco's than a pair of KLH 5's.

That's a tough one. Your best bet would be to do some side by side A/B comparative listening and see which one is most pleasing with the types of music that you listen to. I think the Fives are very good speakers especially in the bass frequencies, however they do require more room. The A-25 is a nice simple 2 way that doesn't require much room and they do sound quite nice, but you have to let your ears be your guide for this one. Side by side reveals all.

Thanks for weighing in. I really like both. The guy that was supposed to show up hasn't made it yet. So it is giving me more time to think.

It is true that both do different things well. As you can probably tell, I am struggling with the decision but . . .

I will keep y'all posted. And thanks for the input. Food for thought as they say.
 
I'd probably keep the Dynaco, but... what everyone else said. Did you try a direct comparison? In my experience, it's usually much easier to decide between two speakers than I expect once I actually set them up to instantly switch from one to the other.
 
I'll be the odd man out and recommend selling all 3 pair since the buyer seems to want them all. Hey you've played around with them. listened to them and had fun with them. Selling them means you could start "the hunt" all over again which is a good share of the fun in the vintage game.

Good point! We shall see what happens. I have a feeling that if the price offered were fair for the 3 I might do just that.

FYI, none of these 3 pair are currently in use.

I will keep everyone posted.

Well then, that does shed a slightly different light on things. Got a pic of the A-25's? Are they truly in new-ish condition? If so, wrap 'em up and hang on to them. Truly new condition (un-restored) A-25's seem to be appreciating rather soundly. I'm keeping mine! :thmbsp:

I've never heard KLH 5s. Have owned 6s and 17s, sold both. Still own Dynaco A25 XLs and A35s.

Oh my goodness, those 5's look very nice indeed! You need to give yourself a bit more credit on your restoration of the cabs. Get yourself some grill badges. And yes, the A-25's look very nice as well. I can't recall seeing original A-25 grills that clean. I dunno man, I'd be hard-pressed to sell either of them. If you are hell-bent on getting rid of them, at least get a decent dollar. If you really want to sell them at a give-away, CL price, invest in an AK membership and list them on BarterTown and work with another AK member rather than a CraigsList flipper. Are you up for shipping them? If so, list them on ebay with plenty of pics. My advice? If you aren't really hurting for the dollars, hang on to them.

Well, you said a mouthful. $'s are a bit tight of late and was trying to raise a bit of cash.

But you are right, it would be a flipper type deal. Maybe I can squeak it out and hang onto them. The EPI's are definitely up for grabs though.

Thanks for the compliment on the 5's. There is a thread on here somewhere. Restore a finish and wax and steal wool goes a long way. And I do have badges, I just need to secure them to the grilles.

Gee, I think I am talking myself out of a sale. With the help of my AK pals of course!
 
FWIW, I find the A-25's to be a more "fun" speaker than the Five. As in "wow, how does all that sound come out of there.

The Fives to me are a "cooler" speaker. Better for jazz or acoustic music. Definitely enjoyable to listen to as well and I love the way they look.

That's tough. The dynaco's don't show up that often. And Epi's are what I turn to for a reliable change of pace. They don't really act like your average 2 way. But the Model 5's... Sell those, more drivers to replace come time lol

If it really comes down to it, consider selling the Epi's, they seem less enchanting than the others. I'm not much help, sorry. lol

Yep, can't really argue with that.

Uh-huh, also agree (see my previous post in this thread). "Cooler" as in a less-hot top-end? If so, I couldn't agree more. A very "East Coast", restrained (attenuated) top-end, sounding speaker. Good tight, fundamental lower-end, outstanding mids and smooth roll-off into tapered highs. You won't get the bell-like overtones of a cymbal tap, but the harshness of other speakers that attempt it is completely absent. A totally listenable and non-fatiguing speaker system IMHO.

I would keep the Dynaco and the KLH...only because I have both...and love them. I know,that was NO help! Sorry.
