KLH model Five or Dynaco A-25

Ha! No problem. I am leaning (read as deciding) in that direction. Not to put a cap on my own thread but I have to thank you and everyone else for their input on this decision.

Keep the 5 and A 25 and tighten my belt!

That's tough. The dynaco's don't show up that often. And Epi's are what I turn to for a reliable change of pace. They don't really act like your average 2 way. But the Model 5's... Sell those, more drivers to replace come time lol

If it really comes down to it, consider selling the Epi's, they seem less enchanting than the others. I'm not much help, sorry. lol

I see you have a pair of ADS 910. I have one too. I sold my EPI 180 which is a great speaker, my Dynaco 25 and I am thinking letting go my KLH 5. Why? Because I think none of them gets even close to the ADS 910 or other big ADS. Of course it is not a fair or apples to apples comparison, but since you are not listening to the other 3 pairs and have an awesome and rare speaker you are well covered. Just my $0.02.

I did have the Dynaco A-25's for many years, unfortunately they developed some mold in the cabinets that my wife objected to, so I let them go. I have RS Nova 8's which are copies of the KLH 5's. I also have a pair of KLH 6's. If you MUST drop one set, you will need to decide on how you will be using them. On a bookshelf, go with the A-25's, floor standing, go with the KLH 5's. Good luck, but I'm warning you, as soon as they go out the door you will miss them terribly!

I know. I think I have talked myself out of this temporary financial crunch and am rapidly realizing how much time and effort went into finding, and in the case of the Fives, restoring them.

Even though I am not really using either of them at the moment, I will want to at some point and will be kicking myself for being short sided.

I power my 910 with a Conrad Johnson MF2200. However I think the best sound so far is with the fully restored Marantz DC300. Just a really nice fit.

I also have to confess that in my small listening room (not where the ADS are) the Dynaco did magic when paired with the now gone fully restored Dynaco st70 (Will Vincent version). There was just something sweet and satisfying I really can not describe. I got an awesome deal on a pair of Vandy 2 and those made me letting go even of my ProAc response 2 which I loved.

I recapped my fives also and they do sound great! Well, it looks like the sale has been called off and I am glad.

On some level or other I regret parting with almost every pair of speakers I ever sold. That goes especially for the two pairs of restored Model Thirties I used as stacked pairs. One of those pairs I'd bought new back in 1972.

With ADS L-910's, I'm not surprised the others are not being used in your system. Do you have a spare room with no stereo in it? Why not set up a small system and use either the A-25's or KLH-5's?

Both the A-25's and KLH-5's are common enough to be found on CL/eBay or local sales venues fairly often. So, if you ever did a double take and say "damn, wish I didn't let them go", you could always get another pair.

That depends upon your location. I've been into this stuff for about five years and I've only come across one pair of KLH Fives and zero Dynaco of any model.

My KLH 5 "clone", the RS Nova 8, improved greatly with recapping , just like your KLH 5 did. Actually I only recapped one so far. I'll do the other this winter when the wind is howling outside. It's really interesting how well Radio Shack copied the KLH 5, perhaps someday I'll come across a real set of KLH 5's and compare them.

Well, they are safe and sound. The A-25 really is something special. A lot of sound from a little box.

I hear you about the recap on the KLH. They don't do everything but what they do, they do great.

I think the attachment comes from the effort it takes to find and then restore these pieces to their former glory. Perhaps it is also nostalgia and appreciation for an era in design (before the concept of planned obsolescence) that is no longer relevant to the majority?

Yes, I do have an extra room where these speakers rotate. In my bedroom system. In the end, after much hemming and hawing on my part, the sale is not happening.
