Klipsch Heresys with a drunken history

Hey all!

I got my nieghbor into vintage and he has been bite by the bug big time. He travels for his job and always plans his travels well in advance via Craigist. Recent scores include a Pioneer SX 980 receiver out of a barnand a pioneer PL 50 turntable.

A recent trip to the small town of New London Wisconsin netted the subject of this post.
A garage sale was not showing much when my neighbor's brother spotted a Klipsch badge up in the rafters of the garage. The owner was summoned. He explained there we 4 speakers up there. They were in a bar nearby for 25 years or so. The bar closed and the speakers were put up in the garage.

They got them down and what do you know....4 Klipsch Heresys with matching serial numbers!

I was about to say that this thread sounds very interesting :-D
but then I thought that those speakers have been in a bar, probably one that allows smoking... so damn those speaks will need some cleaning up. Hopefully they're all still functional tho, because those are quite a find ;)

Anyway, the man wanted 5 bucks per speaker. Sold.

Questions:

The crossovers say type E but look like E2, right? 2 black caps in the back and one black woofer cap. Getting the crossovers kits from Bob Crites.

Getting sanded fight now. Any other changes inside or out?

How will the sound with a Sansui 9090 and a Pioneer PL 50 w/ Grado black?

your 1982 Birch Raw (wood stained by the owner) Heresys were made at the transition period and some call them Klipsch 1.5s (not an official name) because you speakers are mounted from the inside and you appear to have the E2 networks of the coming Klipsch Heresy II...make sure you note that for Bob as the crossovers will be a bit different IIRC...congratulations on your new Heresys for a bargain!

...also take note of what speakers you have inside as during this transition, you may have a mix of Heresy and Heresy II parts...none of which will limit your enjoyment on your score...

Definite candidate for score of the year.
Best I have been able to do at $5 a speaker was 4 Minimus 7's for $20. Good little speakers but not Heresy's.....

Congrats!!!

I'd like to thank my buddy "occonnorweb" for getting me hooked on vintage stereo. The $10 per pair of Heresy's, has turned into 20 hours of restoring the cabinets, and a quick course under Professor Crites for cross-over rebuilding.
This is fun stuff, and listening to vinyl again is such a kick.

The people I've met when buying equipment ( PL-50 in MI, Sansui 9090 in Cary, IL., pl-518 Geneva IL, Sx-980 from a barn in Battle Creek ) and everyone on AK are the greatest.
There has to be a 12-step program for this!
 
why in the world would someone go to all the trouble of putting 4 big speakers in the top of a garage if they were only worth 5 bucks each? Why didn't the guy just throw them in the street after pulling them out of a bar?

OK. Got the crossover upgrade kit from Bob Crites. Below are the old E2 crossovers and the new caps supplied by Bob. Thanks Bob.

Fairly easy job. Soldering takes practice. Kevin is happy with the work. Time to install it all back. New gaskets for the squawkers. Hoping the sound is.........:scratch2:

Very nice so far. I really like the crossovers. The cabinets look like they are solid even if they need to be refinished. Keep it coming!
