They were recorded on tape with microphones. The sound engineer then did the mixing on 2 way speakers is what you mean. Yes, I also know that most highly rated sound engineers were over 50 and had lost most of their hearing (I also favor tone controls on my gear, so I can correct, usually bright, recordings). Also, a lot of those speakers you mentioned were first made when highs only went to 16khz and not 20khz like today (same frequency response of a stereo lp).
Anyways, it's what I hear with 2 ways, a dip in frequency response around the crossover point, which is a higher frequency on a two way than it is on a three way (500hz to 700hz on a three way and 1000hz to 1500hz, ouch, on a two way).
you need to do some reading and dig into some history you are very misguided and very mistaken.
 
The measurements for the KI-396 (and all other pro gear) are done in an anionic chamber and do not take into account the typical room gain you get in the home. I've had my pair for going on 2 years now and they're not bass shy at all, I get usable bass all the way down to 24hz.

Room gain will normally get you about an extra octave or so over anionic measurements in a well designed speaker. But it really depends on the room too.

Another thing the KI-396 have going for them is they're turned somewhere around 35 hz in an undersized cabinet. This is really common in pro audio speakers and because of the way a bass reflex system works it will let you add about 5db of EQ at or above the tuning frequency and will only add a negligible amount of distortion. That gives these speakers a lot more potential even in large spaces.

Do you really mean ‘anionic’? It seems like ‘anechoic’ is possibly the correct term. Klipsch doesn’t seem like the kind of company to get into negatively charged ions, etc.
