Lafayette Receiver Value?

KingBubba

"Too Much Stuff"
A local thrift has a Lafayette L-1000T receiver for sale for $80. Brand new they were over $200. Any opinions on the $80 price tag? To me, it seems high for an OLD receiver.

It's a LR-1000T. RMS output per channel is about 25 to 30 watts. Uses two 2DF45 output transistors, CS1307 (NPN - sub 2SC485) and CS1309m (PNP - sub 2SA485) per channel. Lafayette issued several service addenda on it to replace several transistors and a few other parts. Output and driver transistors I don't believe are still on the market although I may still have some output transistors (would have to look) but definitely none of these driver transistors. It was common to blow the output transistors and one or both driver transistors. It was only listed in the 1968 and 69 main catalog. Replaced by the LR-1000TA receiver - much improved and then by the LR-1000B - much more improved and had a new look. IF strip used several of the Japanese version (ICF-1) of the Fairchild UA-703 IC's. These IC's were notorious for failing if you looked at them the wrong way.
All the resistor values should be checked and most of the electrolytic capacitors probably should be replaced since the receiver hit the market over 50 years ago.

Personally, I would go back with a set of headphones (stereo 1/4 inch plug) and at least try out the receiver. If it's connected properly to the FM antenna terminal, the line cord will act as an antenna. But, I wouldn't offer more then $50 and would start with a lower value.

I found one at a thrift for $35.It would shut off after about twenty minutes.Paid $65 for repair and $20 for knob.Total $120.Sat for a couple of months on cl for $100.Finally paired it with some Pioneer CS 77 speaker and it finally sold for $100.It was a decent sounding unit but quite frankly no one wanted it

For an "as is where is" 25-30 watt receiver that seems to high. If it is a very in demand brand like a Pioneer, Sansui, etc. at least you have can sell of the knobs and get some funds back. $80 does not leave much room for issues.

There's no meat on that unit. You can't even test it out properly.

I have a rule that I don't buy anything that I would list at under $50. Helps reduce the clutter.

Edit: What that has to do with an $80 unit, I have no idea. Brain fart!
