There was a thread a few years ago covering this, but it didn't have any resolution.
I used to have a first generation Apple TV - which had a built in optical out for audio. I would run this output into my two channel Yamaha and use my stereo for movies/music (turning down the TV speakers volume when doing so). Apple removed the optical out from the 2nd generation Apple TV.
So, now I use a J-Tech Digital 4K 60HZ HDMI Audio Extractor Converter in this setup:
1. Apple TV (2nd generation)
2. HDMI into the J-Tech Extractor
3. HDMI from J-Tech into LG TV
4. Optical from J-Tech into Yamaha S501 integrated
This functionally works, and I detect no degradation of audio or video signal. However, I can't get the optical audio output from the J-Tech to synch up with the hdmi audio/video that is being passed through the extractor to the TV. I don't want to use both the TV internal speakers and my yamaha amp at the same time, so I'm not looking for perfect alignment - but I do want the extracted audio to match up with the video signal.
The audio signal that is being extracted and output via the optical to my Yamaha is a fraction of a second (but noticeably) ahead of the audio that is going to the TV via the HDMI passthrough. I've tried all 3 settings on the extractor itself, as well as trying the RCA outs in addition to the optical out. I've played with the Apple TV audio config, and I've played with audio options in the LG settings. The only settings that made any difference were when I time compensated the audio track on the LG. I could make the LG speakers synch up with the extracted optical audio, but then they would BOTH be slightly ahead/early of the video image.
Is this a problem with the relatively inexpensive J-Tech audio extractor, or is there some inherent audio/video delay that the LG TV (or any tv) is introducing - something that doesn't happen in the optical stage of the yamaha integrated amp? Anybody deal with this issue and have any tips or workarounds? I saw in one thread that some AV Receivers have delay compensation settings, but my S501 does not.
