Large Advent question

New Member
I found a nice looking pair of Large Advent speakers on craigslist. So I'm trying to get more information on them.

Some images I found show Large Advent speakers with the tweeter with a square shape in a "diamond" position, and others have Large Advent with the square positioned in a more traditional manner (flat ends of the square going up down and left right). Are these two different versions of the speaker? Is one much better than the other?

I did a search on this forum butter didn't find a thread that mentioned if there was more than on version of Large Advent.

Diamond backplate pattern is on the Original Large Advents....normal square is New Large Advents or Advent /1's. Everything you've ever wanted to know about advents can be found with a search on this site for "identifying your advents."

The ones on local craigslist ad look like pictured "New Large Advent". He lowered the price to $100. Are these nice sounding speakers? I would be using these with my Sony PS-X6 Sony STR-6050. Music would be classical music and classic rock.

My understanding is that the new advents have a better tweeter and the original advents go a little lower in the bass department. I might be wrong on that but that is what I remember about them.

A friend of mine has a pair of the original advents and they sound pretty good.

100 bucks seems to be around the going rate, as long as they are in good working and cosmetic condition.

That is my 2 cents.
 
Not a horrible price if they've been refoamed. Definitely want to recap those to gain their full potential (simple on those). Nice bass, down to 30Hz, and once recapped the fried egg matches nicely with the bass.
 
Try to find out if the correct foam was used when the woofers were re-edged. If generic el-cheapo foam surrounds were used they will be too stiff and the speakers will not sound right at all. The correct foam surrounds should be extremely supple and thin. Makes a HUGE difference, I found out the hard way.

So audiojones, where did you find the correct surrounds?
I have a pr of NLA's that need to be refoamed and, I did read somewhere that it's important to use the correct foam...Thanks!
 
Ok so I have the speakers in my living room now. The foam surrounds don't seem to be supple and thin like you describe, though, the seller said it was the correct foam he used. I too am interested to know more on the correct foam, If these don't have the correctbstuff, I would consider redoing with the correct foam.

I will post pics tomorrow. For now, I'm waiting for my Sony STR-6050 to arrive Friday.

One last question for today. on the speaker terminals which one is positive and which is negative?
 
Everybody insists they use the correct surrounds.

If they are stiff, they are the incorrect ones.

Rick Cobb's surrounds have worked well for me. Find him on ebay: looneytune2001, IIRC.
 
I'd suggest that you go to this guy at McPeak Sound mailto:msound@citlink.net and send pictures so that he can get the right ones to you. I did that for my 25th anniversary larger advents and he was very specific about which ones needed to be used. They sound great. Apparently different years have different requirements. Here is a pic of mine. The tweeter mounting plates are slightly wider that they are tall on these. If you got then for $100 you are doing fine!

I got the correct foam from "myaudioaddiction" on fleabay, but Rick Cobb's are the correct ones too. At first I used the $8.00 el-cheapo foams on my Advent 5002s and they sounded thin and "squawky" (not the reputation that this speaker has at all).

I realized my mistake and replaced them with the thin compliant ones from My Audio Addiction, and the difference was like night and day. The bass response is so much better and consequently the rest of the frequency range evened out and fell into place making it a fantastic sounding speaker. Just because the surrounds are the right diameter doesn't mean that they are the right ones for the speaker, so don't be fooled by sellers who claim that "all foams are the same" - they most definitely are not!

I notice the copper wires outside the woofer, is this normal? Should I be able to see the copper color of the wire?

Also, I'm quite certain the surrounds aren't the ones you describe and recommend. These don't feel thin and supple. My receiver (sony str-6050) arrives tomorrow, I will listen to them and see what I think. Problem is, I have nothing to compare them to as I have never listened to other Large Advent speakers. If you suggest the sound difference is noticable and much can be improved, I will have them refoamed. There is a speaker shop (midwest speaker repair) outside of St paul, that is well known. I will call them next week for an estimate.
