A few months ago I somehow got interested in restoring lava lamps and making new novel looking ones. Here are some pics. Have been listening to lots of music while enjoying this other hobby.

So what's inside a Lava lamp anyway?

A former neighbor of mine worked at the Lava Lamp HQ in Chicago (where I once visited)
and he said what kills Lava lamps is leaving them turned on all the time.

Thoughts?

Your friend is correct. A lava lamp should be run maximum about 8 hours a day. You can ruin a lava lamp quickly if it is left on all the time.

Depends on then they were made what is in them. After 2003 the fluid is water and surfactant and the globs are wax. Prior to 2003, it was a much more complicated mix of stuff.

I'm not selling. Don't want to deal with shipping.
Can't blame you there. I 'm stuck with dealing with USPS and It really suxs. Your restorations look really good. I have been window shopping myself for another plasma globe.

Thanks - Didn't know any of this. Glad I run mine only occasionally. I don't recall when I got it, have no idea what formula it has.

Cool!

@BmWr75 Where are you sourcing your wax/surfactant? I've seen kits from LLC.

Think I might need to redo my 52oz globe. Think it's a 90s chinese made one, as it's got a crimped cap with an H number on top.

I got about 20 vintage ones used to have them on top of the TV cabinet when we went to a flat screen wall mounted they all went into a closet. Only one we use now is a Red one full of glitter. Wife uses it as a night light in the bathroom upstairs its on 24/7.

LLC for wax. Ozone Gifts for surfactant. Would buy Ozones wax but it is never available. Kits from either seller will work fine.

Vintage lamps (~pre-2010) bring big bucks these days.

Show us what you got. Better yet, tell me where you live.
