Lava Lamps

Those who have a Menards nearby can usually find an assortment of lava lamps in the lighting section.

I loved my color organ!!! Funny thing is that to use that lighted box, it had to have it's wires spliced into the speaker wire, as there were no outputs accepting bare wire on the unit, but only those late 60's mini plugs. Even with my Electrophonic all in one stereo, complete with record changer and ceramic cartridge and sealed speaker boxes containing a single, cheap full range driver, I was worried about the sound degradation!

Lava lamps are totally cool! ...That's what I put under my car (as neon lights).

I love mirror disco balls too. ...That's what I use in my home theater room while watching some boring flicks.

I also love black lights and black light posters.

All the vintage lights have something truly precious that nothing new (no fiber optic wire lights) has.
 
OK, so thanks to this thread, I actually had to research the lamps.

I now know they were supposedly invented by British accountant Edward Craven-Walker in 1963. I also know that the "Lava" is colored wax. I never knew that. I thought it was really LAVA! ;) Well, not really.

The S.O. plugged in the lamp so we can enjoy it tonight. It's like watching clouds. You can see what you want to in the shapes. If you know what I mean...
 
Here are my two Lava Lamps. One is located between my receiver and turntable, and the other is located at the back of my listening room. I usually turn them on when I get home from work so that they are all warmed up and flowing by the time I sit down to listen to some music later in the evening.

The silver lamp looks exactly like the one the S.O. bought a few years ago, except ours is purple liquid with red lava. She says she bought it at Kmart. Actually, that's pretty neat they still sell them. We are enjoying the glow as I type.
 
Yeah, I picked the silver one up at Menard's a couple of years ago, and the black one was a thrift store find.

Jonman; You named your Lava Lamp Bob? Lava Lamps always struck me as feminine. ;)

I was wondering if anyone would catch that. Although it is not actually a reflection of an album cover, but is instead the reflection of a U2 poster I have in my audio listening room. It just happens to be of the same photo that was used on the cover of War, which also happened to be my first U2 LP which I purchased in the early '80's.
 
I got my first Lava Lamp for my birthday last month. It's pretty cool, but gets stuck when the ceiling fan is on high. I need a better spot for it. I hadn't thought of naming it. Back in the day I had black lights and all the cool posters.
 
Lava lamps, water beds and black lights with glowing posters on black velvet. Only thing missing is some Floyd and a bong. Yum...70s goodness.
