Lava Lamps

Actually I'm listening to Gabor Szabo doing Sunshine Superman right now and that would work with the bong nicely as well.

What about filling your bong with Scope mouthwash and/or ice cubes? Would they pull your man card altogether?

Really? I never saw them or heard of them until the 70's. According to Wiki and other sources on the net, Edward Cravin-Walker invented them in 1963 in Great Britain and they hit the American market around 1970.

Doesn't really matter. They are here now.
 
I got mine in the late 80's. It used to be black- sprayed it with high heat silver to match my gear. Looks much better at night!

They were first marketed in the mid-sixties. There was a book store in my hometown which had a kind of novelty area of the store and they had Lava Lamps in there. I vividly remember my friends and I looking at them and oooohing and aaaaahing.

Debbie Downer here, since those lava lamps use incandescent light bulbs for illumination and heat for the moving blobs, are there any retrofit solutions in the future that actually fits?
 
I've accumulated a number of lava lamps over the years. Mostly modern types, but also an older Century model with pinholes in the base. Here's an image of two of them, set up in a "lava-off":

Unfortunately, neither of them 'flows' very well. :sigh:

Here's a picture of what may be my favorite lava lamp, the 200oz "Lava Grande" in yellow/purple, sitting next to a real '70s icon, a Weltron 2001 "Space Ball" AM/FM/8-track stereo:

This has to be the "Coolest" thread on AK. Makes me want to watch re-runs of "Charlie's Angels", burn some incense, listen to some Deep Purple, and hang my Farrah Fawcett poster back up.

Have you put in a new globe? After some use the globe doesn't generate as kuch heat as when it was new and this doesn't get the temp up high enough for the "lava" to flow properly. You get all these alien embryo forms and shapes, or it just has big globs that do nothing.

By "globe" you mean incandescent blubs right? It is getting harder and harder to find them, at least in the US.
