LED Kits

I installed the Prelude kit for the MR85; was a very tedious process, as the wires from the PCB were too short to easily reach the holes in the faceplate. The grommets are hard to get into place, needed to disassemble the entire front of the unit. But, eventually all done and looked OK, but certainly no better than OEM bulbs. But then, the manual tuning ceased to function. Removed the LED kit, put in new bulbs and tuning now works normally. Threw LED kit away.
I recommend for the MR85, at least, to just keep the bulbs; they are very easy to replace.

Did you get that kit from us? If so, email me, we will refund you. There was one issue we ran into early on that caused the issue you had, a new cable was supplied that corrected this issue.

I got it straight from Prelude Audio.
I was so relieved the tuning worked again, didn't pursue the refund!

Ryan,

I own a MAC 1900. It's in for service at Terry DeWick's. Is there a LED solution for my beloved? It's a PITA to change the bulbs on this one and on the MAC 4100 which my son owns. Thanks!

If AC doesn't offer an LED kit for the receivers, contact AK member dgwojo. He will have either the LEDs or long-life lamps. The lamps dgwogo supplied for my MC7150 are rated for 50,000 hours MTBF, which longer than the LEDs, which are typically 30-40,000.

no one really answered this question:

"whats the difference between the LED light kits from A.C. and the individual LED bulbs that are available from dwojo or D. Haywood? Can you just plop in the LED bulbs or do you have to modify the electonics and install a retrofit kit with a ballast or transformer or something."

I think this question has been answered. If I understood correctly, the models for which A.C. has kits are those in which the bulbs are soldered into strips or some similar structure. The other units in which the bulbs are in sockets, may (or may not) be able to use the plop-in LEDs, depending on the voltage, etc. used in each unit. I suspect that over the many years of production involved, the specs may have changed from unit to unit. If your unit has sockets, check with dwojo or D. Haywood to see if their LEDs will work. If it has soldered strips or the like, look for your model on the list of kits. If it's not there, post in this thread and maybe A.C. will come up with one, or have another suggestion.

Someone correct me if I've got it wrong, please?

this essentially what I am trying to find out if can do, which is see if I can brighten up the meters on the 2105 and the 2505 seen sitting on top of a 7205.

You can see how clearly bright the 7205 is, so is there a way to brighten up these two older units with these long life LED bulbs, Doug seems to think so. Or am I wasting my time! I will send Doug these pictures as well and see what he thinks as well.

But maybe what I should do is make the 36 dollar investment for one amp and just see what they look like, that way I can check the plexiglass while I am in there.

Cleaning and polishing the clear plexiglas will also likely help. Let use know how it works out with the LEDs if you put them in on the MC2105. Also, check the voltage on your lamp sockets. May be that the voltage is low as the part values may have drifted as with age. I'll check mine next time I get it on the bench. Was supposed to be today, but 24"+ of ugly white stuff :thumbsdn: is blocking my driveway and sidewalk, so the MC2105 will have to wait.

MC2205 panel and lamps need help

I reported a flickering lamp in the RIGHT meter the other day which means the bayonet sockets need to be Deox'd. Why not ELIMINATE the mechanical sockets? Despite new blue gels and the reflector described below, the meters in general are "grungy" with a brownish appearance in the lower left and right corners of each. Since the amp needs a new glass and transparent plexi sheet, why not do it all up all at once with replacement LEDs?

Is this what you want for meter lighting?

Recent threads are describing bayonet adapted LED lamps. Why not remove the old lamp sockets and change to a STRIP or two across the top of the housing? It makes little sense, and sounds like a kludge to adapt LEDs to mechanical bayonet sockets. Do the LEDs illuminate broadside in an omni pattern? or must they be "aimed" forward?

I've YET TO SEE A SINGLE OUTLINE SKETCH of any of these lamps!!

As for the 2205 Lamp Housing, it's already had the rivets drilled out and reflective backing installed. The intention was to add a sheet cut from a 48"x24" fluorescent light diffuser/cover. This material is available at most home stores.

MC 2205 lamp housing with four side rivets drilled out and fabricated reflective backing in place.

So let's answer the question.. do the bayonet adapted LEDs have an omni broadside intensity pattern (or beam)? or are they square aperture that need to be "aimed" toward the front? Also let's see an outline drawing of the replacement lamp.

Drilling holes to install LED strips

I'd have no qualms about drilling into the TOP surface to install STRIPS of LEDs across the eight lamp holes!! See below the rebuilt and polished housing. It would have been buffed to a high gloss if a bench wheel were available!!

MC2205_Love_housing_done.jpg

MC 2205 lamp housing reassembled with bright aluminum flashing and stainless hardware replacing the four side [bracket] rivets.

Let's hope the case for STRIPS of LEDs to replace BAYONET-adapted lamps is now a real possibility. Dang it.. I'll make some etched glass epoxy boards myself if necessary!!

This 2205 baby is going to be a hum dinger. :banana: { easy dude - your scaring people }

I made my own for my 2505 , lately though a couple of the led's are acting up..mmmmm...time to modify?

Those are your breadboard prototypes? Now transition them into production units. You'll need professional quality PCBs and a suitable mounting scheme.

Haven't had my 2505 open in over a year, but for the 2205 it looks like two 4x LED boards could be held to the top of the meter housing by tapping a 4-40 thread at each end. That would mean drilling four 0.089" to 0.096" holes and cutting threads. The LEDs would extend down through the existing LAMP openings. It could easily be returned back to original configuration (pressed in bayonet sockets.)
