Looks like a rare short wave tuner

Should have a separate amp/preamp/tuner connected by umbilical

That one should have an EL84 PP stereo amp...had the chance to buy that same model locally for $40, but passed due to limited real estate (other consoles :D)

That looks like a similar model to one that I have, except that one also has the tuner and 3 handles at the front:

cool!

I am planning on gutting this one as its aesthetics do not please me.

Will the power amp work well without the preamp? I am planning on using these together though, but it would be nice to be able to use them separately.

The preamp would be easily contained in a cabinet.

I am making the drive tomorrow to pick this thing up!:music:

I passed on an amp like that at a hamfest recently,,may have been a mistake, but just had too many projects at the time... Think he was asking 60 bux...
The one I saw was easily standalone material,,, that one looks the same...

Altho on second look, I don't see the drivers on that chassis, unless there's just one in front of the cap???
Best of luck...
Regards,
John

There'd need to be at least two more tubes more than are visible, for that amp to be usable stand-alone. It would need at least one dual-section tube (either dual triode or triode/pentode) per channel, for input gain and phase inverter.

Gordon.

I see.

I could build the preamp section into a cabinet and use a cord to connect the power amp.

How do these sound compared to a Magnavox 9300 EL84 PP amp? I have one of these already, but the coolness factor of the pair excites me.

That should work fine using the VM preamp. I did similar with Motorola, Arvin, RCA and others, although expect your woodworking skills to be much better than my rough & tumble efforts :D (at the time keeping kids' fingers and animal paws out):

The sound is quite good with decent closed-sided OPTs.
