Let's see and hear about your coolest 12" singles:

That is true and solid advice, VR.

This thread is unfortunately reminding me of singles I should have, but can't find yet.

I have a crapload of Depeche Mode 12 inchers from mid-late 80s in the basement I should bring up if anyone cares. That's a band I've never really gone back to. But there are some on splattered vinyl, which is something silly that I still dig.

Oh yes. I care. Any DM from Music for the Masses in 12"? or in fact anything from Some Great Reward to Violator!

A tip: if you don't already know, if you can find the UK Virgins, buy them! (12" 45 RPM and 33 1/3 Lps) You will not believe the dynamics, killer, always a much better sound than the U.S. Geffens and the covers are often nice too... happy hunting.

Happy Listening! :beatnik:

I figured that out when I bought my UK Virgin copy of "Senses Working Overtime" and listened to it for the first time nearly 30 years ago :yikes:

BTW, the Geffen copy of the Dear God EP was a recent find/impulse buy I made out of curiousity.

I've got a DM 12" "Behind The Wheel" from Music for the Masses but don't listen to it much for two reasons:

It is pressed at 33rpm, not 45rpm.

Side one is two versions of "Behind The Wheel/Route 66" and side two is two versions of "Behind The Wheel." A bit too redundant for me.

It does sound awfully good though as all four are dance mixes that have tremendous bass response.

thanks for starting this thread, Mr. Lin

I'm a fan of Twin Peaks...

me too! It would be great to find a copy of "Falling" on 45 RPM 12-inch.

Well, I have a grand total of TWO 12-inch singles in my collection:

(1) I'm not sure which is the a-side and which is the b-side, so this is a guess: Diana Ross:"Lovin', Livin' and Givin" from the soundtrack to the 1978 film Thank God It's Friday, which had a way cool disco era poster featuring Donna Summer:

and on the flip side is another Diana Ross song: "The Boss". Man, the late 70s were something, weren't they?

(2) and, at 45 RPM, which I have not heard in years and years and will listen to again as soon as I log off: Jimmy Cliff: "Treat the Youths Right"; it's the same exact song on both sides. This is a radio demo record.

XTC - Dear God EP
Geffen 12" 45 RPM

Not my favorite XTC 12", I'm not all that fond of the sound of the Skylarking album, especially compared to the Black Sea and English Settlement releases.

Although I still need to give it more of a chance, I've never been nuts about Skylarking as an album compared to all their others. My personal favorites are Mummer and Drums and Wires, but I really like nearly all their albums (haven't heard any past Nonsuch, which I also enjoy - and good luck to me finding an inexpensive vinyl copy of that one!).

Awesome! I have most of those, but the vinyl is filthy, so now that I have a more expensive setup I don't really play them anymore. One day I'll get an RCM and bring them back to life. Reptile House is a favorite of mine - I bought them all in Germany a while back.

You too Mr. Lin, UK Virgins ONLY, stay away from the U.S. Geffen, with only one exception, Skylarking LP (domestic) Geffen is not bad, than there's the whole "Mermaid Smiled" or "Dear God" thing... You've never heard Drums and Wires until you get the UK Virgin copy, trust me.

Happy Listening!:beatnik:

Thanks for the advice! I'm now, after many years of collecting, starting to pay more attention to where my potential vinyl purchases were pressed. I used to really only be concerned about condition. Anyway, despite my comments above about Skylarking, if I had the money right now I'd get the new 45rpm release, which, I'm sure you guys know, is finally at the correct speed after all these years.

A good vinyl copy of Drums and Wires is way at the top of my wish list right now... I have the fairly new CD remaster versions of almost all their albums, and they're not bad, but certainly not ideal, IMO. Works for now I suppose.

On the subject: XTC - Drums & Wires.

Did a little research for Mr. Lin and I'll share it with whoever cares to know...
Here is how the releases went, just to follow up,

UK Record Collector guide says, V2129 is UK Virgin 1979 (first issue had added 7" single in first 15,000) this is the release that I spoke of and the one that you want. This is the one in our house that I listen to and swear by.

Goldmine says, Virgin (US) VA13134 is first issue 1979, PE38151 (US) reissue 1982, GHS4034 Geffen US 1984 reissue. Pass these up.

So there is a Virgin (US) watch out.

Happy Hunting & Listening! :beatnik:

Knowledge is power. ;)

Here's another one I'm particularly fond of. This is the 12" 45rpm single for 1985 song by The Cure called "In Between Days." The U.S. and Canada versions are common around here, so I was thrilled to come across an original U.K. pressing of it, which is different from the U.S. and Canada versions in the following way: The b-sides for U.S./Canada are "In Between Days (Extended Version" (don't we all just love those ) and "Stop Dead," both of which are pretty weak IMHO.

But the U.K./European pressings have as b-sides the songs "The Exploding Boy" and "A Few Hours After This," and these are great songs, particularly the former - examples of how well The Cure does b-sides for the most part, an admirable trait in a band.

I recall reading a quote of Robert Smith regarding "The Exploding Boy," and apparently it was about what a slob he'd become since the alcohol consumption really picked up that year.

the only 12 inch single I have is a 45rpm copy of Radiohead - Karma Police. I still need to finally get a 7 inch record. haha

Well that's a pretty cool one. Radiohead singles are often like ep's themselves, which is something I value highly.

Here's a fun one! Any other Beastie Boys fans?
