Linux Users - How do you stream your music? What's your setup?

Wow! This is fantastic. I believe I can do all of ^that^.

So, every backslash I see in the code should be entered as a forward slash, correct?

I certainly want to be able to access all the NAS folders (a total of 3 music shared files + 1 folder for videos + 2 personal folders) to add, modify or delete files of all types. I'd also like to see them when I sign on. They seem to disappear when the PC is shut down and, later, powered back on. At that point I get to go find them again. I suppose I can add a screen shortcut or add them to the taskbar once everything is mounted, eh?

Do I need to add each of those folders individually?

Whenever I have to add a CMD that includes /nas should that be the nas01 which is the name of my NAS?

I will start on your earlier instructions today then leave this second section for next week.

Thanks again!

"Obviously the Android tablet must be connected via wifi to the same network as your PC, where Roon Server is running."

It is connected to the same network.

"When you first launch the Roon app it should prompt you to connect to any Roon Server it can see on the network - this is your first measure of success."

Double Fail. It didn't connect the first time I tried it. I tried again and this time added the IP address for the HP laptop that Roon Server was installed on the other day. It said "Connecting to ... " but it never did connect after 10 minutes of trying (And I noticed it referenced the right laptop and IP address I provided. I got no further. I must have screwed up somewhere along the line.

I'm guessing I am missing a simple first step or something at the front end of this process. But Terminal said Roon Server "...should be running..." on the laptop after the code info you provided was entered. Roon Remote on my tablet just never found it.

Google shows many people having this problem with Roon controller on Android, with no clear solution.
I would reboot Linux Mint, and restart the Android tablet, for a start, and try a few more times.
Worst case, install Roon controller on a different device with a different operating system, just to test that the server on Mint is OK. If you have another Windows machine somewhere, install Roon-for-Windows, and use it as controller in this case.

Another thought: I see at an earlier stage you accidentally installed Roon Bridge on Linux Mint - maybe this is interfering with Roon Server?
So on Linux Mint do this to disable it -
Code:
sudo systemctl stop roonbridge.service
sudo systemctl disable roonbridge.service

It's weird. I've tried to remove Roon from this Dell Windoze machine but it tells me I have to stop all instances of Roon Server before I can.

I don't think I put Roon Bridge on the Linux machine. I may have typed Roon Bridge for Roon Server.

I will try the sudo CMD to stop roonbridge (if it exists on the Linux machine) but I'm confused as to why I can't delete it from this machine.

Maybe this whole Roon thing is a mistake and I should find another Linux acceptable music controller with a nice GUI for the Linux machine and stop fooling with Roon. I've had problems with it before and this Linux to Roon Server to Node streamer process seems clunky to me even though it was what I wanted when I started out.

Can I use the same commands shown above to stop Roon Server by doing this:

sudo systemctl stop roonserver.service

sudo systemctl disable roonserver .service

Well, Roon is off the Linux machine and this Windoze machine. Once I used the CMD to disable and stop Roon Server.service there were no blocks to removing it.

I'm done with it. I left it behind some years ago after conflict with a Windoze update rendered it unusable. I'm OK with walking away from it even though it was my first choice.

I will have to find some other music player that works well with Linux. I have Strawberry loaded and it found my NAS music file folders plus the two personal folders there. I'll have to investigate whether or not I can connect to my Bluesound Node streamer through that app.

I also should probably take a step back from what I am doing and try to learn more basic tasks like mounting apps, finding apps and using apps in Linux.

I do appreciate the help!

I'm done with it.
I think you could have persisted another day or two, to get Roon working, but fair enough.
I'm a big fan of Lyrion - see my Lyrion server/player/NAS here -
Raspberry Pi 5 Lyrion server plus network share
but unfortunately the NODE cannot act as an endpoint for Lyrion.

Given your pre-existing hardware situation of Synology NAS plus Bluesound NODE, I think the most straightforward solution would be just to use the BluOS contol app on your Android tablet. The BluOS GUI is not great, but it's OK.
This will control music playback directly from the NAS to NODE - there would be no involvement of your Linux laptop at all.
Of course the Linux laptop would come into play to acquire new music, and manage the music library on the NAS.

I have Strawberry loaded ...
Strawberry is aimed at music playback on the same device on which it's running. I'm fairly sure it won't stream to a Bluesound NODE.

Thank you.

I will download the BluOS app & install ion my tablet.

Then I will delete the Roon app & files and move on with my Linux project for daily computing.

Back to the setup of NAS connection to Linux Mint:
So, every backslash I see in the code should be entered as a forward slash, correct?
Yes, every single back-slash in post #20 should be changed to a forward-slash.

I certainly want to be able to access all the NAS folders (a total of 3 music shared files + 1 folder for videos + 2 personal folders) to add, modify or delete files of all types.
That's fine - I'm guessing all of those folders have a single parent folder, and it's this parent folder which is the NAS shared folder. When you modify Mint's \etc\fstab you will specify this shared folder, then all sub-folders it contains will be accessible.

I'd also like to see them when I sign on. They seem to disappear when the PC is shut down and, later, powered back on.
That's Windows behaviour, when you don't map the network share to a drive letter! Don't worry, I have given you the Linux method which auto-mounts the NAS at each boot up.

Whenever I have to add a CMD that includes /nas should that be the nas01 which is the name of my NAS?
Not necessarily. The name of the Linux mount-point has no relation to the NAS hostname (server name) ... however, now that you have told me the name of your NAS, I think that \mnt\nas01 would be a better, and more intuitive name. At a later stage if you add a second NAS to your network, call it "nas02".
So when you create the directory mount-point in the Linux filesystem -
Code:
sudo mkdir \mnt\nas01
and when you use Mint's text editor, xed, to configure \etc\fstab this is the line you should add -
\\192.168.1.50\Mynas_share \mnt\nas01 cifs user=mynasuser,pass=mynaspass,iocharset=utf8

Five days have passed, and there's no report of success for your Linux-to-NAS connection, and neither for your BluOS connection from NODE-to-NAS.
I have a sneaking suspicion that maybe there are problems with your local network?

Nothing wrong with my network. I worked on sorting things out, then I was called out of town for about a week & a 1/2 dealing with a family emergency.

Before I left, I did make significant progress:

1. As I said, the network checks out. No errors there.
2. I connected to my LAN with the Linux PC and mounted my shared drives that are on the NAS.
3. The problematic ROON setup was put aside. I added the BluOS Controller software to my Android tablet, and it works fine. There is no need to try anything else on the Linux PC for music management.
4. I downloaded Libre Office and those programs are functioning well.
5. I downloaded Thunderbird for email and got my contacts list set up. I initially ran into some issues with setting up my Outlook account but managed to get it done. GMail was a breeze.
6. I downloaded and set up the Mozilla Firefox browser, then set up my favorites.

I'm going to do some research on what's in Software Manager for:

1. A slideshow production tool.
2. A password manager.
3. A malware & virus protection tool.
4. Some things I probably haven't thought of yet.

Well done.

I was thinking of:
- downloading music ?
- CD ripping ? (Asunder is available via Software Manager)
- checking, modifying tags ? (Puddletag is available via Software Manager)

I was thinking of playback of my current collection at the time I wrote that. I was just happy to put the Roon complexity for something I already have and currently use.

However, I have:
- I have sent an inquiry to HDTracks, from which I download FLAC from, about their downloader working in Linux.
- Added Asunder to my action list. I also want to check out Whipple and abcde
- Depending on how good a job Asunder, or another package, does preserving meta data during the rip process, I may need something to check and modify tags. I will look into Puddletag as I do a little tag modding from time to time.
