Listened to a $28K Snell/Krell system

Also, it would be cool to hear anybody else's experiences with high end gear and what they thought of their own afterward. As intended :)

Snell and Krell, I realized it sounds a bit funny while driving home.

I'm sure the room helped a ton compared to my room, but the system sounded good. They just got the Krell stuff in a day or two ago so they didn't have everything hooked up. No sub yet. Which I'm sure would have helped the soundstage a lot.

The Krell pre/processor was $12K, the Krell Evo 302 was $12K and the Snell speakers they had in place of the higher end pair they have on the way were $4K. They are getting a $15K pair to go in that room. I don't know what model they were, I think they were a 2.5 way system with a 6.5" woofer/mid pair and a really nice tweeter.

There were some things this system did better than my own, and some things that I didn't like as much. The sound was very crisp and fast and detailed, pretty good soundstage. Walking in between the speakers right up front was interesting and immersive.

For the price I paid for my entire system (1/28 of this system, before taxes :) ) I am very impressed with what I have accomplished with all the help I got from AK so far.

My speakers definitely have better bass, and with a better preamp and amp I believe my system could meet or exceed some aspects of the system I just heard.


I definitely liked my stereo better than their $35,000 HDTV and 5.1 system with two subs, that is for sure. I also listened to a small two way bookshelf system with Dynaudio speakers and a Lyngdorf integrated. I didn't catch how much the speakers were, but the amp was $7500. It imaged like mad and sounded great, but I still like my system better.


Just thought I would share and give thanks to everyone who helped get my system this far with advice and general knowledge that was posted for me to learn from.

Some people like music, some people like toys. The law of diminishing returns would apply several thousand dollars before you could justify that cost. Luckily, there are enough zillionaires out there that can afford something like that as easily as I can afford a vintage Pioneer.
 
Infinity RS 9 Kappa - Biamped with a Yamaha PC2002M and a BGW 500D on bass. Yamaha C-65 and a Yamaha CDX-730, but I usually use my iTunes with an MAudio breakout box cheapie.

Zebra cables IC's and anticables speaker wire.

What do you think of that anti-cables speaker wire? I've never been big on true dedicated 'audiophile' speaker wire other than getting heavy guage regular stuff or maybe monster cable if it's cheap (sort of the same thing as heavy guage non-special wire really :tongue: ) But I might consider something fancier at this point just not if it's going to cost more than the rest of a system.

you know that when you cut the monster cable speaker wire you will find that there is a spit worth of copper in there (that wire can't be more than 20 ga). It's all insulation

I think the anticables are great and give a very enthusiastic :thmbsp::thmbsp:

It was like taking a blanket off the mids and highs in a way... great performance for not much money. Great service too.

I wonder how those Krells would sound with your Infinity's? My guess would be better than the snells, but that is just a hunch. You seem to have a very solid system.

That is what I was thinking. The Krell on the high-pass and the PC2002M on the bass. Especially in that room, I think my speakers might be at least good competition if not better.
 
Your Infinity's are killer, they must sound great. I am sure would put my speakers to shame. ;)

Told ya' so! :thmbsp:

I've spent a lot of time with a friend's system that altogether costs probably about triple what I've put into my system, and there's no question I prefer my system. I think a lot of this has to do with the fact that you build your system to meet your specific tastes, you know?

My polks are too layed back for my taste. I added a ribbon tweeter and it's much better now, but still lacking a little overall.
