Sanding sealer is your friend esp. with pine or with woods like oak that have very different absorbency in the different rings. It will slow down and equalize the stain absorption.

I'll just throw this out there you decide if you want to try it but Automotive spray on Rubberized Under coating like NAPA sells would effectively do what the dynamat would do. You could mask off the wood work around the duct. And just spray mulitiple coats to layer it up to say 1/8th thick. It is made to be used under a car so it will hold up extremely well.

Wow Zekeman What a great job! Hope you didn't forget to run your wiring inside those walls, I don't see any outlets. Did you leave an inch clearance around those supply air grills? Hope so or they wont fit. Anyway thats a verry nice job, would cost thousands to hire someone to build one like that! I'm Verry impressed in your workmanship. Sure your not a cabinet maker?
 
My Dad is an old tin-banger...he is going to customize the register covers for those tight outlets.

I designed is so there is about 2" of space between the back of each shelf and the back of the cabinet. I also installed (although its hard to see...except in the second pic) two exhaust fans at the top of the cabinet.

Re the Dynamat...I want to get some, or preferably an alternative because the stuff is ridiculously-priced,........any ideas?

dynamat is right down the bypass from me.

you can use metal roof repair tape, or gutter seam tape, called a number of different names...get it at home d or lowes in the roofing repair / gutter section of the store. $15 for a 6" x 25' roll. foil top over a ruberized substrate then adhesive... aprox 1/8 inch thick, Peel and Seal is one brand name among many...

the key to install is to make sure the metal you are sticking to is CLEAN. try to get the peel n seal warm.and press it into place . no mistakes...its not coming off without a huge fight so get it right the first time...
 
Drywall and mudding is something I never want to do again.....

Wow! Nice work. I like the colors you chose. I wish I was better at these things. I would have had to carpet the walls to hide the mistakes.
 
And it takes hundreds of years to get all of the dust out of the house.

Lookin' great, though! Wish I had a basement.
