Little Known Gem?

Picked up a Hitachi SR-804 and am impressed. Warm smooth sound and seems to be a lot louder than specs show. Does anyone know about Hitachi Vintage gear, it does not come up too often in discussions on receivers/amps.

Hitachi made more gear for OEM's than anything else. FISHER, RADIO SHACK are the two I can think of right off the bat. They made really good solid gear. They didn't market too strenuously tho. Mainly in the Early-Mid 70's. A lot of the manufacturers conservatively rated their gear from about '72 on, so it's plausible.

Thanks for the info. I have only really known Hitachi for their modern stuff. The good looks and quality are quite apparent from what I got, and for $70, I am quite happy.

The SR-804 is definitely on my radar screen. I currently own the SR-504, and it has great sound quality that definitely belies its stature. But it is pretty underpowered.

Good luck with the 804, I hope I end up with one someday!

I can remember selling them in the 70s. The line started with a SR304 at about 15 to 20 watts, I dont remember there being a SR404 though there could have been, definitley a SR504, SR604,SR804, and I do remember a SR2004. Robust, good sounding amps with decent reliability. jim

I had a question about the SR-804.

But what I wanted to know is if there were proper speaker connectors I can buy to fit in the back of the receiver? Other than what I'm doing now, just twisted wire into it. I'm not sure of the name of the connector though, they aren't banana plugs though. 4MM? Thanks.

Does anyone have a manual they can email?

Since I posted above, I have owned an 804. And it was everything I thought it would be. I gave it to a friend before our recent move, or I would still have it.

You are limited to bare or tinned wire, or pin style wire connectors.

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread, but I just picked on of these up yesterday, and did a full cleaning on it, and it sounds as good as my Sansui 517, not kidding!
The tones are very smooth, powerful way higher than the 50 watts claimed, I'd say closer to 100!
I have it hooked up to a monster set of Audiosphere Research 18Ls that are rated conservatively at 250 watts, and this receiver pushes them no problem, the giant 18 inch woofers start dancing at only quarter volume. I have to crank the Sansui 771 over half to do that!
I am pleasantly surprised! Total sleeper!!!
and does it all while looking pretty. Oh and it is built like a tank as well, I was surprised at the attention to detail!
SHHH don't tell anyone, I want them all to myself, ;)

Nothing to be sorry about that's a great receiver. Congrats:thmbsp:

Seven to eight years down the road...and the secret is STILL not out. Managed to nab FOUR Hitachi's over the last 2 years. Two beautiful SR-903's (I couldn't pass up the second for $115, having gotten the first mint SR-903 for $134). The second came a bit dirty/unkempt...but cleaned up beautifully. Unfortunately, the second SR-903 is a "tad"" bit too big for my office. An SR-503L (fully restored, cherry condition) came to the rescue. Only $120 and this thing just had a full recap, problem transistor replacements, and an alignment. Crazy, but I was the only one to place a reserve bid on a local site. In any event, the previous owner had all of the work professionally done for his temporary use; while his primary amp/receiver was in the same shop for a planned revision. Once his cherished receiver returned home, he put the 503L up for auction. This little 503L is perfect for the office and looks like it was just unwrapped from the box, new.
I suppose I have had my fill of Hitachi's...every one of them is a great-looking performer. Unfortunately, last week an SR-804 showed up on that same local site, this time for $61. It's fully functional (lights and all). For $61...with those VU meters to boot...here we go again. The only issues I can find with the 804 are typical of an average vintage unit: lifting veneer around the vents, scatchy controls. This will make a nice little project piece. Deoxit treatments (D5 / F5 where appropriate), ESR checks/recapping, veneer replacement (or vinyl wrap), new ALU feet, etc.
Now, if only an SR-2004 would show up under these same conditions...one can hope.
