Litz wire??? What can I do with this stuff.

The wire isn't good as short wave antenna wire because it loses its effectiveness up around 1 MHz.

As for using it for ordinary applications, you are asking for a lot of work because you have to strip each strand at each end to make sure all strands are being used. If you miss some, you have lost some conductivity.

Best to use it for its intended purpose, to wind rf coils in the .05 - 2 MHz range. Probably your 455 kHz IF transformers are wound with the stuff. And maybe your loopstick antenna.

Hey,thanks for all the ideas and input guys!

Rick, I had read a bunch of litz wire sites after picking it up and was trying to digest the frequency in relation to wire gauge deal. I was thinking that increasing the number of strands would by all rights, get you to where you need to be to get proper LF. I just didn't have a strong sense of what it would take.

I'm going to try what you suggest and see where that gets me. Should make for a fun speaker wire or IC project. Who knows, maybe the same place I got the wire from will have a old tired solder pot kicking around :thmbsp:

I don't think that is Litz wire as the individual strands don't look to be insulated (wrapped in cotton or similar).
If that's the case I think you could use it for any general application.
Or use it to wire a seriously huge tonearm.
What gauge would you estimate it is collectively?

It's about as close to 16ga zip cord as your going to get.

Ron, you could get some of that teflon spaghetti tubing thats been going around and make yourself some really good speaker wire. What you have there is equivalent to 16 ga.. It would also be good for input wire to anyone in St. Paul that is building a Pass F5 (hint, heh).
All about Litz.

Hmm, now who could that be :scratch2::D

This is where I'm a still a bit cloudy, Lance. I was under the impression that going by the frequency chart, maybe this wouldn't work well for that or even speaker cable, IC's or inductor. Reading the responses and also after a conversation with battradio, it's sounding positive. Getting past the apparent the tinning PIA, if 30ga will get you 1KHZ and 28ga would get you down to 60HZ, I would think that 16ga would more than get you down to where you want to be. :scratch2:
