Look at what a friend just gave me... a Marantz 2250B receiver!

Wow, that light diffuser was extremely melty! Definitely worth an upgrade to a new piece. Nice work on this one. Any plans to build a wood case for it?

My friend originally had a wood case on this one, but he threw it out years ago because it had gotten pretty damaged. Too bad. :tears: I would have liked to try my hand at repairing it.

I would like to pick up a wood dress up kit as opposed to a full wood cabinet. Personally I like their looks a little better than the full case, but of course that is just a matter of personal taste.

Do the LED conversion, at least the fuse lamps that backlight the meters and tuning scale. The incandescent bulbs in there run hot enough to melt the plastic over time. I had to remove the front face and take mine out that way as the plastic was too deformed to get them out the back.

I am very seriously considering it. However, now that I have the 200ma lamps installed, I am not so much worried about melting this new light diffuser as I am interested in making the display a little more blue. I don't know why particularly, but even after replacing the diffuser paper with new vellum, it appears just a little too green for my tastes. (It looks much more green in person than the pictures would suggest.) I am pretty sure it is very close to the way it looked when it was new, but I think the bluer display of my 2238B and 2252B have left me preferring that look. We'll see...

^ I don't either, and probably never will (going rates are too high for my taste and I don't have any friends with spare ones willing to let go of!), although I too find them so beautiful to look at. I'm sure they sound wonderful too. Sansui is supposed to be very close in sound. To that end, I'm quite happy with the AU-719/TU-719.

Keep your eyes open, as I'm sure one will show up if you just keep looking. I have only been doing this for about a year, and so far I have ended up with 4 Marantz receivers. I only paid $50 for two of them (the 2220 and 2238B), and received the 2250B as a gift. I paid the most for the 2252B, but it is a unit I really coveted, and even at that, I only paid $160 for it. It needed some work, but not a lot in the real scheme of things. They are out there. I'm sure one will come across your path in time.

heads up: If I were you, I'd absolutely check out an LED conversion in person - IF you are a person who listens in the dark, the LED's may be too bright for you.

No leds for me either and vellum isn't that great at bringing out the blue, try some drafting paper otherwise known as mylar paper-it's much heavier than vellum and will not discolour from the heat.

You know, I have worried about that a bit, and it just so happens that I do a lot of my listening in the evening with the lights turned down, so that is certainly something to consider. Thanks for the heads up.

BTW, I just noticed that this was my 1,000th post on AK! Kind of a milestone I guess.

In fact, I had an idea and decided to asked our mechanical engineer at work this afternoon if he still had any left around (our company moved to CAD over a decade ago), and it just so happened that he did. He walked right over to a cabinet and pulled out a sheet and handed it to me. Probably the first one that he had pulled out of that stack in a decade. He also gave me a couple of sheets of vellum paper for good measure. I think I'll be doing a little experimenting and seeing how these different materials effect the look of the display on this receiver this weekend. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Good deal on the paper!
I relamped both of these units and another 2230 at the same time (didn't change any paper tho, it didn't need it) so that they'd all have the same "hue", as I intend on keeping them as a set.
