I am looking for a volume pot for a Marantz 1150 amplifier from the 1970s. It is part number RM0254031. The pot is 250k x 2. Does anyone know where one might be found or know of something that will be compatible?

What’s wrong with yours?

Right channel repeatedly cuts out. I have cleaned it vigorously with Deoxit F5 and it will work fine for a while before acting up again. I can sometimes play it fine for several hours and then it will crap out. I think it just got tired after almost 50 years of service.

Have you 100% determined that it is the volume control that is the problem and not the speaker protection relay? You can try connecting the Pre-out L to Main In R, and Pre-out R to Main In L and see if the problem changes to the left side. If it stays on the right, then it is not the volume control.

Typically, when a channel "cuts-out" it is because the relay contacts are either oxidized or burnt. Usually it occurs at the lower volume levels.

The other thing to check is to see if that same happens on all inputs (phono, aux, tape, FM, AM, etc.).

One more thing to check... connect your cd (or whatever) to the tape 1 input and select tape 1 on the tape monitor switch. This will bypass the push button controls for source selection.

I was originally convinced that it was the relay and I replaced it with a new one a couple months ago. Problem remained.

Yep, problem occurs on all inputs.

My Marantz CD player runs to the tape 1 input source and I experience the same issue there also.

As a further note, when the right channel cuts out I can turn the volume control up, WAY UP, jiggle a bit, and the channel cuts back in. It won't last forever, but that will get it going again for another burst.

I have not pulled the volume pot from the amplifier. It is really squeezed in and is not going to be easy to access.

Let me ask this: I am told that the Marantz 1150 amplifier that I have is similar to the Marantz 2275 receiver from the standpoint that uses the same amplifier board. Each is 75 wpc. Some people have described the 1150 as being the same, more or less, as the 2275 minus the tuner. Other than differences that may or may not present in their physical dimensions, what is the likelihood that the volume pot from a Marantz 2275 (pn RM0254022) could be used in my 1150? Both are 250k

I have blindly purchased a used pot and am hoping that it will work in my amplifier. Perhaps you have seen its picture online. If not, here it is. Pulled from a Marantz 2050, it is 250k(b)x2 as is mine. It is also the same pot, from what I understand, as was used in the 2275.

Looking like I might have bought that pot for nothing. I was reading through some of the many posts on AK about Marantz volume pots and came upon this wise nugget of advice:

Connect the Pre Out jacks to the Main In jacks using a pair of RCA cables. If that 'fixes' the problem then give the jacks a short spray of contact cleaner, work the RCA plugs in and out a few times, then run it without the cable to see if it is fixed. There are switches inside on the jacks that connect the Pre Out to the Main In when nothing is plugged in to the jacks, and those switches get corroded.

The suggestion was made ten years ago by runningdog. I followed his advice and have been able to listen to three albums with no problem at all. I'm not 100% convinced yet, because I have sometimes been able to go hours with no problem before it came back. Still, I am optimistic and will report back as things progress.

As far as the 2275 and the 1150 go, the amp boards are mostly the same.
I don't know that much else is the same.

I am now three days into flawless performance after following the suggestion in this post:

Prior to this, I had repeatedly cleaned every pot and every switch on the front of this amplifier. It did not occur to me that a jack on the rear could cause this problem. Thanks for the help!
