Check eBay, garage sales, thrift shops and flea markets. I picked up a $2 Panasonic portable recorder two weeks ago. I don't know if Radio Shack still sells them, you might want to check there also.

What kind of quality and format are you looking for?

As for cassettes, Marantz made the PMD series....I believe that the 530 was stereo...

Sony made some nice walkmans, such as the WM-DD6 and WM-DD9 that could record...

neither are cheap, but are very high quality.

if you want a cheap, easy solution, get one of those Alexis mixers with the iPod dock built in and record straight to your iPod...that's a nice all in one recording package. I know that it's not analog, but I heard one and it was quite good, and odds are, it's better than most portable cassette recorders. I usually either do R2R or digital, and skip the cassette format for any critical recording, just taping stuff off of the radio.

Format doesn't matter. I don't have a ipod so that rules out digital recording. All I'm looking for is something that sounds good and is durable for recording stuff outside and bad weather.
