Looking for floorspeakers

Hey guys,
I'm a 21 year old college student looking to step up my audiophile game this summer since I'll be living on campus all summer and want to spice up the living situation. Right now I have a pioneer VSX-1019AH amp, two Boston acoustics bookshelf speakers, an Infiniti center speaker and an Infiniti subwoofer (I don't have the exact specs at this time because I'm posting this from my parents house.) These sounds great and can crank up on a Friday night, but I'm looking to step up my game with a pair of floor speakers! I want something in the mid price range (under $400 brand new) that can pump up the sound and bass on the weekends, but deliver a fairly rich sound for movies and video games on the day to day. I'm open to used vintage speakers or new era stuff. I understand that sounds like a contradiction, but I would love to hear suggestions from you all!

Hmm you can get some pretty good used speakers for that price, I'm not sure if there's anything new you can buy that will be better than what you have now. I'd look for some used Klipsch or Cerwin Vega if volume and thump are what you're after. Or a bigger subwoofer.
 
Your local CL probably has listings for giant monkey-coffin Fisher or Sanyo or Technics floorstanders with the 15" woofers. You don't sit quietly and listen to Enya with any of these.
Put your Boston Acoustics on top for that stacked sound everyone talks about.
 
$400 for new floor standers doesn't get you much. At that price, used is the only way to go. My first suggestion, given your Pioneer, would be one of the larger Klipsch KG series (KG5.5, KG4.5, KG5.2, ...). You will not get good bass from a $400 set of new floorstanders. Depending on your priorities, a used set of Cerwin Vegas would give you all the bass you could want.
 
Check the CL listings for Polk RT800 tower speakers.
I just had a pair come through here and I was pretty impressed.
Audiophile quality sound and you will have enough cash to sink into good source.

The new Elac line has been getting a lot of praise. Are you looking for 2-channel or home theater?
 
Don't buy new speakers. Used, heavy floorstanding speakers are the best deal in audio. You can often get them for 10 cents on the dollar because...significant others...absolutely detest them. You are in that wonderful period of life when that doesn't matter, so take full advantage. Snell Type A's sat forever for $400 on Bartertown and the local Craigs. Now THAT's a speaker!. Big, fantastic sounding floorstanders from ADS, IMF and even JBL (the SVA series) are all in your price range. Good hunting and stay single!
 
So I found two on my local craigslist that seem solid.
1) Used set of Pioneer R50's for $200 in great condition (obviously will have him test before I buy)
2) KEF coda 9 pair for $150.
Thoughts?
 
Assuming the above link is your local Craigslist, I clicked on it and the first thing I saw was a pair of DQ-10s for $400. He says they were refoamed 15 years ago, so it's probably time for a new foam job. Point that out and maybe get a discount.

A search for speakers in the electronics section brought up some nice stuff.

Sweet looking Philips speakers for $500. High end Philips stuff is not common in the US, so this guy may have trouble moving them and there may be room for negotiation.

A nice pair of ADS speakers for $550 that includes a Yamaha separates system.

A pair of ESS speakers with Heil tweeters for $190.

A pair of Frankenspeakers with Heil tweeters, car subwoofers and giant holes where passive radiatiors should be for $100. You don't want these, I just mentioned them in case someone else is reading this who might want those tweeters.

There's a lot of cool stuff on the Hartford Craigslist. Happy hunting!
 
Get a pair of Polk SDAs and you will listen as loud as you want (assuming adequate amplification) and you will never need a subwoofer.
 
How big is the room you are in?

Don't assume a pair of floor standing speakers will out perform a good sat/sub setup.

Look into a pair of Miller and Kreisel sats and a volkswoofer and out perform the above suggestions in a lot less space.

I'll second the Philips speaks on Craigslist. I've heard the FB1000, they're really decent, and these are just under in the range.
 
I'm going with a pair of Cerwin Vega E-312's for $300, which seemed like a steal for what your getting. What do you guys think?
 
Well, since no one has replied, I'll give you my 2 cents worth (might not even be worth that).

Haven't heard the Cerwin Vega E series but I think CV's in general would probably be a good fit for what your looking for. Your the only one who knows if they sound good to you, we all have our own preferences. It looks like the ones you are looking at have new foams which is a good thing if done correctly. Just make sure they are properly centered. You should be able to hear if they are rubbing. If in doubt, carefully push evenly around the center of the cone (not on the center cap). You should be able to feel if they rub.

I am not familiar with pricing in you local market but it seems like they might be priced a little high. Since they have been listed for over a month, I would probably try to talk him down some.

If you do decide to go with them, you might want spring for a matching center channel. It looks like the Cerwin Vega E-D6C was designed to go with them though you might want to double check that.
