Looking for some Information on Boston Acoustics A70s

Hello Everyone,

I am new to the forum. I recently bought some BA A70s because I grew up listening to my Dad's stereo which utilized Boston Acoustic A100s. I love the sound of the A100s so I'm hoping I like the A70s close to as much. I would've opted for some bigger A series but I am in college so the A70s will be much more convenient. Right now my set up looks like this (have not received the A70s)

Mac Mini (Lossless Files)>>HDMI>>Yamaha RX-V475>>Klipsch KB-15 Bookshelf Speakers and Sub.

I am most likely going to replace the klipsch with the A70s as long as I like them more which I think I will.

How do you guys think the A70s will mesh with my receiver?
Would you use a sub with them and what would you cross the sub at?
Anyone else using some A series Boston Acoustics in their system? Would love to hear you opinions.

I have a pair and they are very good sounding speakers. Lots of people here have them. If you go to the search button at the top, you can find lots of threads on them. I have better search results with the bottom box. Enjoy
 
Great against a wall, unlike most speakers. Had some, sold them, miss them.

Yea, thats what I have read which in my opinion is a good trait to have. Save some space especially at college. Did you use a subwoofer with them?
 
There are tons of Boston Acoustics fans around here, especially talking about their older speaker lines. My personal intro to them was similar to many others. I found a set at a thrift store that needed new woofer foam surrounds... refoamed them, and ended up with a nice set of speakers for cheap.

The rest of your system, I'll simply say that in general, inexpensive home theater receivers are not highly regarded for 2-channel listening. If you don't experience that sweet sound you remember, I wouldn't blame the speakers.

*EDIT* just looked up the specs on that receiver, and they don't look half bad for 2-channel. 80 W per channel (8 ohms, 20 Hz-20 kHz, 0.09% THD, 2 ch driven) Moral of the story, let your own ears decide.

Thanks for the input. My Dad's A100s were matched with a nice onkyo from the time. Hopefully this yamaha receiver does ok with them but if not what is a good 2-channel receiver you would recommend?

No, but I do not use a sub with any of my 2 channel sources. A70's are acoustic suspension with tight accurate bass. If you like loud, booming bass, they are not the speakers for you. Ported and acoustic suspension speakers have a different sound in general. My personal preference leans toward AS, but there are good speakers of both types. A lot depends on the music you like.

I love the bass accuracy of my Dad's A100s without a sub. Those have much larger cabinets and a 10 inch woofer instead of the 8 inch though.
 
My son has these in very small bedroom. I think they sound great and have plenty of good sounding bass. If you are used to using a sub you may have a different opinion.
 
You'd be better off getting an old Sansui receiver to run those B.A. speakers on. Cheaper and will sound better than your Yamaha in two channel.

Me too. Very nice sounding speakers.

Check the surrounds closely. If they haven't been refoamed recently, they will most likely need to be. Not a bad job and the parts are easy to come by. :music:

Edit: Since I play lossless files from my Mac Mini through HDMI I'm not sure how I would do that with an older receiver. DAC?
 
I had great results with an old pioneer SX-780 Receiver, they sound fantastic at the time. Definitely a little synergy at work with the Pioneer.

There you have it. Onkyo! They made fantastic receivers and mate nicely with the Bostons.
I have collected only 2 complete series of audio gear, the Onkyo TX MK II's and the BA "A" series speakers. They are both great values and way under-rated. Here is the "lowly" 2500 MK II http://echohifi.com/details/7225/Onkyo_TX-2500-MKII. This is just a sample pulled off the 'net.
They usually go for under $100.

Awesome I'll keep an eye out. Would I run an optical audio cable from my Mac Mini to a Digital Analog Converter to the old receiver?
 
If it has an audio out jack,like an IPOD, they make a cable for about $15 that splits to 2 RCA-style inputs. I got a decent one at Target, they had 3 different brands. You can plug it into the tape monitor or AUX jacks.

Edit I can't post links to products for sale here but if you google RCA adapter for Mac Mini / Ipod/ you will get a lot of options

Also look how cheap the 2500 MK II sells for using completed listings on the auction site. Average way under one bill. Those things are built like tanks.
