Luxman Alert

Thanks for the tip, I picked it up for $103 which is probably an OK but not great deal. Too bad that if it were not for just one other bidder I would have "stolen it" for around $40. Platter doesn't turn which is a well known problem with the DSS and hopefully an easy fix.

The cartridge is a mystery and I am praying for a pleasant surprise. It has a gold body and a black stylus with a large S on the front. Anyone know what it could be?

Any advice on how to get the platter to spin?

It looks to me like that stylus says Sonus on it. Sonus Faber perhaps? I'm not sure that they make/made cartridges, but if they do/did, I imagine they are very nice.

Good luck getting the platter spinning. I'm hoping, for your sake, that it's just a bad connection or switch.

That's a Sonic Research/Sonus cartridge. Sonic Research was the company founded by Peter Pritchard after he sold ADC. Their cartridges were rather like ADC -- high compliance moving irons -- and sounded good, though they needed low mass arms to work well.

They had a problem with the vac-u-suck system that would stop the turntable. From what I understand, it's not a big problem to fix. A very nice table, when in full working order they are awesome.. I went 0 for 2 Luxman shopping this weekend myslef. You did very well.

Thanks all for the comments, I hope the stylus is in good shape as finding a replacement might be a challenge. Now I am wating for the seller to come through by getting it to me whole. I am hoping he packs better than he spells!
