Luxman PD-264: Anti-Skating Not Working – AS Dial Moves Rod, No Effect

Hi all,

I’m dealing with an anti-skating issue on my Luxman PD-264. No matter how I adjust the dial (I’ve turned it fully each way), the tonearm consistently pulls toward the center. I see that the anti-skating dial pivots a thin rod underneath. The rod stretches from its pivot point into the tonearm housing, and with the turn of the dial, it moves back and forth (left and right) in there. But I have no idea what it’s engaging with—possibly magnets that have become dislodged or lost their strength? (Or a spring?)

Everything else, including the auto-lift, works perfectly and is calibrated.

The manuals I’ve found online don’t indicate anything about how the anti-skating functions or provide troubleshooting methods, and I can’t find any discussions or videos online.

If anyone has successfully repaired the anti-skating on this type of model or similar, or has the knowledge, I'd be grateful for your help! And if I need to take apart the tonearm housing (as I suspect), what level of difficulty will I face? What should I look out for, and what parts might be affected? Do I need to go into the housing down from the top or up from underneath?

Any insight would be much appreciated so I can get this guy up and running right! Any info I need to give or photos/videos need--please let me know.

Yes indeed—the turntable is perfectly level in all directions, bubble-confirmed. Also, I’ve done some more tinkering. It seems the springs inside the anti-skate dial give pressure to the rod, which then pushes against the tonearm housing. The more pressure the rod applies, the more outward force is exerted on the tonearm. It’s possible that the springs have lost strength, the rod is out of position, or both.

I’m trying to determine whether the rod is supposed to move or stay fixed in place on the housing. While the dial moves the rod back and forth, it seems like the movement of the rod would keep its tension constant whether the skating is a 0g or >4g. In addition to the skating dial moving the rod, the tonearm housing also pushes the rod forward as it moves inward through the grooves. I guess it would have to do that though.

In short, I don't think magnets are involved after all; instead spring tension on the rod. I have to figure out how to get in there to find out more. Worried about taking apart all the tonearm housing.
 
Did you ever sort your anti skate issue? I have the same turntable, but it completely lacks the anti skate mechanism. I've just seen a for spares turntable for sale but the anti skate part looks different as I think it's a newer version of the pd 264. However, I too can't find anything online to help with what the anti skate mechanism exactly consists of and / or how it works.
