Luxman R-1050 on it's way...

Thanks, maddog37, for your review. What I've noticed about the R1040 I have is the same as what you have said about the tone controls----haven't used them (except to experiment with them when I first got it). I tried the Loudness, but that was way too much. I'm running the 1040 through a pair of 1980 Klipsch Heresys. All I need for my living room....
 
I bought a 1050 at a garage sale a few weeks ago for $10. Near mint, and beautiful cosmetics. I love the sound, but I didn't realize until this post what a gem I got for cheap. Thanks!
 
R-1040 has been my laundry room receiver for a while now, and I love it. (Don't let the laundry room thing put you off, I spend a lot of time there, it is the second most important location in my house) hooked to some Polk Monitor 40's I have had it for a while and I still can't keep my eyes off of it. It's such a beauty and the sound matches the looks. I can only imagine how much you'll enjoy the 1050!! Enjoy enjoy enjoy!

Enjoy is my middle name (other than "Payfor"). I have a great 1040 and it has been a great source of enjoyment! Even brings out the "Electric Ladyland" passage much more clearly from my '68 vinyl (via Thorens TD 160). Nothing wrong with a laundry room! beats the trip to the laundromat. So if your laundry room is your second favorite room, enjoy your 'first' favorite room as well. I'll bet the Polk 40's can reach there, too.
 
Thanks, starquest52! I am eager about getting this. For me, it's Christmas in May! I've heard nothing but good about the r-1050 (although I've read a lot of other opinions/problems --- but if there were not any problems,......)
 
A co-worker of mine bought a Luxman receiver a couple of decades ago and I never forgot how he went on and on about how great it sounded....and he used the word "smooth". A few years ago I discovered a very good vintage audio store in Toronto, (Queen St. West, almost at Roncessvalles), where I purchased a Lux R-1050 for $125.
I was immediately struck by the warmth and smoothness of the sound. I have a Harmon Kardon HK 3370 in my living room, matched with two Thiel bookshelf speakers, but the sound just doesn't quite compare with the matching of the Lux R-1050 with two Celestion DL4s. Both speakers (Thiel and Celestion) were purchased for their accuracy, and they are very accurate according to my experience, so I figure that the difference in sound has to do with the receiver. The Theils were bought in the 80's. I listen to classical music most of the time-cd's, and Luxman gives a more "tubelike" sound, ....it gently cuts off the hard edges of digital sound. I hope that in the future I can find a more powerful Lux amp or receiver, and even more accurate speakers, (tube equipment is very expensive). Yes, the seventies were a golden erra for sound equipment.....don't tell anyone. EB
 
ericbj, I have heard that comment about the 1050 so many times (tubelike sound) that there must be something true about it. Luxman did something right ---- especially deriving that sound out of solid state? Wow. I am driving a pair of early Klipsch Heresys so a 'tubelike' sound should help take the harshness (too strong of a term, but it's all I can think of right now ---hard day!!) of the horns. I did have a pair of ESS AMTs with Heil mid-range/tweeters. Wonder what the Lux would sound like with those. Back in the late 70's I had 4 Large Advents --- no worries about 'harsh sounds' there! Digital cuts actually helped the Advents. The Luxman should, like you said, help cut off the hard edges of the cd's. Thanks for your comments and encouragement....It should arrive here by Friday.
 
I just won an auction for a Luxman R-1030.. A careless bid I forgot about until I got the winning notification - not bad considering how the higher models seem to get pricier exponentially, but certainly not a steal either. The last thing I need is another low-powered receiver, but I figured I'll give this one a shot and see if it hopefully bumps my other SS receivers out of rotation.

Anyone have the R-1030 and care to comment on how it compares with the other models in this series? I seem to hear the most about the 1040 and 1050 - how does the circuit differ from the 30 WPC to the other models?
 
Man, that looks clean. I love the wood and the layout. This might go on my wish list. What is the sound comparable to? I am a Sansui and Marantz fan.

Very different from the higher models, but still that era's typical Luxman sound. Better than the other brands, no doubt, but not perfect, either.
