Hello AudioKarma folks..
Looking for a little help. OK, a lot of help.
I have a Luxman R-1050 and one channel is not working.
I have owned the receiver for 20 years..
Any suggestions on first steps to investigate the problem
Secondly,, anyone know how to take the casing off ?
Thanks for you help.

Did it just recently quit?

Maybe wiggle, push, exercise all buttons, pots, and switches especially the tape monitor and see if it comes back. If not, look for any fuses and a possible blown fuse for that particular channel.

Thank you for taking the time to respond.. I will try the switch and button wiggling process.. Do you have a Luxman 1050 or similar? If so,, do you know how to take the case off ?

Remove the screws and square 'washers' on the bottom and it slides out to the front.

Lotta fuses in there. Some on the amp board and others.

Perfect. That is what I thought. But, it seems odd to me to have the screws at the bottom. Thought I had better check before I did damage. Owned this for 20 years and never took the case off. Wish me luck.

Hello again.
Took the case off of my R1050 Luxman receiver.
Looks pretty clean for being so vintage.
There was a blown fuse to the speaker.
2.5 AT type (T= time delay or slow blow).
I looked around and most stores have stopped selling those fuses.
Amazon Canada does have these for sale.
5 Qty. T2.5AL250VP 2.5A 250V Slow-Blow Glass Fuse 520MM https://a.co/d/0ya3aIm
Thoughts ?

Feed back if you think the fuses from Amazon will work.
I did measure the original blown fuse and it does seem to be 5mm by 20mm.
Thanks in advance
Jack

Those are fine. Check your speaker wires and make sure they are not shorted together. Where they connect to the terminals, on both ends, they should be stripped to no longer than 1/2" and the wires neatly twisted together and inserted into the terminals with no copper visible. If the wires go through a wall or under a carpet, examine them to make sure the insulation is intact.

Good news and great advice
I would imagine you are telling me that because that is a possible reason for the fuse blowing.
Thank you.

Now,, I have the cover off should I do anything extra like blow off the boards with air or just back away slowly.

I would:
1. Vacuum the interior, using an acid brush, paint brush or toothbrush to dislodge dust. Blowing it out just moves the dust into your home.
2. Power the unit up and measure the voltage between the fuse input side and ground on both channels. Should be less than 100mV.
3. Follow the directions to clean the tuning capacitor here: https://www.audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/how-to-clean-a-tuner-analog.144163/

Update . Don't want to let folks hanging.
I ordered the fuses from Amazon.
They will arrive Thursday.
Gently vacuumed the interior of the unit.
I am not going to do any further cleaning as I can't identify the modules in the instructions above in the link.
Dr*Audio.. thanks for the instructions but I am such a novice I am scared to follow them. You should make a video for the dum dum's like me.
I will give an update on Friday.

Back for more help and opinions.
The fuses arrived from Amazon.
Replaced the bad fuse.
Powered the luxman R-1050 up..
As you know the Luxman does a health chech power on sequence. ( The power light blinks ) then you hear a click and the power light says solid.
After I replaced the fuse with T2.5AL250VP 2.5A 250V from Amazon, the Luxman won't come out of the health check power up sequence.
So, I unplugged. Tried a second fuse in the new pack of fuses.. The same thing.. Won't come out of the power up sequence.
So,, I put the old blown fuse back in and it power on properly.
So,,, I think it doesn't like the fuse..
Thought ?????
Thanks in advance.

That channel probably has a shorted component, I would try a lower amperage fuse until you figure it out to prevent further damage. A dim bulb tester is suggested until you figure out which component is shorted. If I am working on a amp known to issues like this I prefer the fuse blow then take out more components, at idle they never blow unless there is a bad component or short. Check them strands of speaker wire as suggested, on both ends of wire. Disconnect speakers all together until you figure out more.

It has blown output transistors. From your replies above I gather this is above your pay grade. If you tell us what city you live in someone may know a qualified technician.

And I swapped the blown right channel fuse with the good left channel fuse and it powers up without issue.. I am still leaning towards Luxman doesn't like the new fuses..

If there is home depot close they do sell quality fuses, pick up a pack of 1amp fuses also would be my suggestion. Are you sure those fuses you ordered were directly from Amazon and not one of their resellers listings because you have to pay attention to that on amazon? There are people on amazon repackaging and selling total junk.

Do you have a multimeter to test the fuses?

You put a new fuse in place of the blown fuse and the amp will not come out of protection.

Your amp came out of protection when you used a blown fuse.

You put a different original fuse in place of the blown fuse and the amp came out of protection.

Was this step with a new fuse where the old good fuse was? Or was it without that fuse?

Just to confirm.. It is not blowing the new fuses..
And I live in the eastern side of the GTA in Ontario.
Most likely with the fuse out the output stage is not powered up. When you put the fuse in, the output stage powers up and has DC voltage on the output because some transistor is blown.

Update
Drove all around my area to all the electronic stores and finally found a repair shop that had the right fuse.
Bought one brought it home. Looked identical to the Amazon fuses.
Powered on the Luxman with no turntable or speakers hooked up. The unit would stay in a consent blink never fully powering on.
Powered off and unplugged the unit and switched to a different new fuse. Same results.
Powered off and unplugged the luxman. Put the old fuse back in. Powered on the unit and it would fully power up with only the one channel working
Powered off and unplugged the unit.
Had a smoke or two and did some serious head scratching.
Decided to replace all 4 fuses that are on the board.
Powered on the unit and Abra cadabra the unit powered on successfully.
Hooked up speakers and turntable. Ran it through its paces and everything is working just fine. Sounds wonderful.
Thanks to everyone who chimed in to help me .
Tell next time. And there will be a next time.

Jack
