Luxman R-117

Going to go look at a Luxman R-117 tomorrow , it will be about a 4 hour drive one way . From everything I've found on it seems to be a vary desirable unit to pursue ?

All I know about it is the left channel doesn't seem to be out putting sound on A or B speaker's and it was exposed to heavy cigarette smoke , it does have the remote control with it.

Any simple issues it could be before I get far into it , or things to check for when I go look at it ? Is this a hard unit to service ?

Trying to factor the effort being worth it.

Could be a relay.

About 100-300 for a broken unit. Parts are worth money. But we are supposed to talk value only in the dollars and sense forum. This one may get moved there.

I was unaware of that ,I made an edit to avoid getting moved in that case.

So I spent 9 hours and 500+ miles on the road to day to pick it up, he also had a matching Luxman EQ , some guy low balled him and told him good luck getting any money for it , that miffed the seller enough that he just through it in with the receiver for me.

The left channel is not putting out sound , that I was aware of.

Hooked speakers up and an audio source , it's not putting out much power , 12 O'Clock volume on large Advents , not vary loud , maybe what I'd expect at 7 or 8 O'Clock.

I hooked my source up to my SX-650 to confirm it's not my source limiting volume , 9:00 on the Pioneer is much louder than 12:00 on the Luxman.

So low power out put and zero left channel out put , power supply issues ?

Good news is the remote functions as it should.

Don't know the unit...
Try using the pre-outs/main-in, eg connect iphone to main-in, check audio. Then go from pre-out to another amp.
Check audio, dropped channel....

You could also use RCA cables to cross the pre-power amp connections, ie, connect RCA from left pre-out to right main in, likewise from right pre-out to left main-in, left channel still missing points to power amp issue. If right channel is now missing then a preamp issue.

Yeah could be dirty switches or spkr protestion relay or... tools to trace the audio would be helpful.

I've found the push buttons to be wonky and cut the sound in and out on the 117... Tone Defeat and Subsonic. Cleaned them a few times, next time I go in going to permanently bypass them, at least the subsonic.

Agreed!!!

Try pushing them in and out, my experience has been they some times will stick or get sticky, the heavy cigarette smoke you mentioned could be the culprit

A good cleaning with Deoxit should help

This unit has dual / spare pre outs so that would be easy to do.

Another thing that has been mentioned with the 117 is while you are in there check all the boards grounding screws. Also be very careful deoxing the volume control...very easy to wipe the delicate carbon track and is NLA.

My second unit does have an issue with the tone defeat button too. I used it on my first one to keep more stuff out of circuit since I never use the tone controls. But the second one I have to keep the controls in play because I get a low hum if I use the defeat switch. :dunno:

Hope you can get it worked out because IMO it was well worth the ride for a great unit.

After a couple bad experiences with D5 , I only use Fader lube F5 on pots. Do you remove the board from the face plate to clean those switches ? Stuff is packed pretty tight in this receiver , takes a little digging to get to things.

I appreciate the tips.

My old shaky hands, eyesight and little tech knowledge prevents me from doing anything like that to mine...I'm just passing along the quirks about the 117 I've learned from AK and elsewhere.

Lots of experienced guys on here to help you out though.

I',d also check the connections soldering on top of the amp board for the channel that's out.

I've had cold solder here that made a channel intermittent. Found it by gently probing the problematic board with a wooden chopstick while listening at low volume on throwaway speakers.

I've done some voltage checks vs the good side , I've left it powered on , performed the idling adjustment and was able to get both sides adjusted to spec. After leaving it just sit powered on for a few day's I've noticed the bad side ( Left ) heat sink is warmer (92 deg ) than the Right side (77 deg ).
