Going about 4 hours away to look at a Luxman R-117 with a remote ,

Issues known at this point

No sound from the left side on A or B speakers , may be able to fix myself or may need a tech

Asking $100 OBO , may offer $75 ~ $80 , would that be a pretty decent offer / deal ?

That would be a decent offer for just the remote on this unit.

Did you get pics...one obvious tell would be if both jumpers from the pre-amp to the mains are in place on the back. Other than that the 117 has known issues with the speaker relays. At that price I would buy it for parts...but then again I already have two of them I could use them for.

Here's an example...

My take is the current owner isn't aware of what he or she has, as an owner of a R-115 I can say they are very well built and rarely have I read about major issues with this series (R-11x) of receivers.

More times than not I've seen issues with the speaker relay as previously mentioned.

If that were the case I would jump on it, drop it off at tech and fingers crossed it's something minor

Well 9 hours and 500 miles later $100 lighter I picked it up and he threw in a matching EQ , the vintage places say people are hunting equalizers so figure I can use it or sell .

He did replace the relay that was mentioned and the jumpers were both there , some guy offered him $5 for the EQ , he was miffed at the guy and just gave it to me so I gave $100 for it all, didn't think I'd get hurt at that price , it's dirty so it should look alot nicer when it's detailed.

Nice! You dont see the Luxman EQ"s too often.

I wonder if he knew there's actually 4 relays for the speaker outputs? I'm no tech but I'd check to see if you get a L&R signal out of the pre-amp section first.

Now that your no longer discussing monetary issues and you would like more assistance, trouble shooting etc hit the Blue "Report" link in any of your posts and ask a Moderator to move this to General Audio Discussion where a LOT more eye will see this thread

I did start a thread in the general discussion and was informed monetary discussions had to be here and since I still had a monetary question I opened one here as well.

Going to post back on the original thread I opened , probably tomorrow , pretty much toast tonight and College football > Luxman R-117

I have discovered some other things just checking it out ,

The left channel is not putting out sound

Hooked speakers up and an audio source , it's not putting out much power , 12 O'Clock volume on large Advents , not vary loud , maybe what I'd expect at 7 or 8 O'Clock.

It's either when I get around that 12 O'Clock volume, or plays for 2 or 3 minutes the unit shuts the speakers down and or the whole unit shuts down.

It will only play through the CD input ( haven't tested phono ) I can select other inputs and the indicator light for the selection comes on but it continues to play the CD input. If I plug my source into one of the other inputs I get vary faint to no sound out put .

Good news is the remote functions as it should.

Do you have the CD Direct button pushed in? If that is in it bypasses all the other inputs.

Yep...and some people have had that button create havoc too I've read.

I have never cranked mine much above the 10 position and I listen very loud...I would be very afraid at 12.

I've found the push buttons to be wonky and cut the sound in and out on the 117... Tone Defeat and Subsonic. Cleaned them a few times, next time I go in going to permanently bypass them, at least the subsonic.

Yes , that was it ,all inputs work now cool , now if the rest of it can be that easy.

It's just got no power , sounds clear but it just isn't pushing any watts out , plugged my source into my Pioneer SX-650 just to eliminate it , and it blows the doors off the Luxman at 9 O'Clock on the volume vs the Lux at 12 O'Clock .

I would have never pushed 12 but it just isn't cranking out sound like I'd expect , gonna clean all the controls and see what happens , nothing to lose.

So I found the low power issue on the right side , connector was bent and pulled loose on the right amp board, straightened the pins and seated the connector , also found a connector on the CD direct board not fully seated.

Cleaned all the controls , got the tone defeat to snap back out every time , it wasn't before.

Still have no left channel , can I run the pre out into say aux on my Kenwood to test for sound on the left channel or do I need something with main in's to do that ? Trying to narrow down where the issue is.

Seem to be an issue with the amplifier section , I get both channels running pre outs into another amp , at least I can use it as a pre amp if I can't fix it , lol

Did you check the 4 speaker relays? They are usually one of the first things to fail on the 117.

I use mine as a pre-amp to two Crown amps..one for each set of speakers. Then another to my sub.

Look for something like this on the relays...melted black cover.

The guy I got it from had already replaced both left channel relays ,I think thats where he gave up and decided to sell it.

Well I looked it over and the way those big power transistors are soldered to the board I didn't want to mess with them. I like how this receiver is built in sections attached to metal brackets, easy to separate sections but the amplifier boards are too close to the heat sinks to remove components without either removing the heat sinks from the power transistors or de-soldering them from the board, they don't look like common transistors to me so I'd rather not risk damaging them.

My local tech seemed confident he could take care of it for me so I dropped it off to him , unfortunately it's about a 2 - 2.5 month wait, I have alot of other equipment so not a big deal , better than some wait times I've heard from others.
