Luxman Suckface, what was Luxman thinking?

I watched the video and I guess I am underwhelmed -
I did not see any big visual change in the video -
what exactly does the "suckFace" do?
Think I'd rather have the old Marantz with the Lissajous display screen for "dazzle"

When it's off, the silver face around the knobs is pushed out to be flush with the knobs. When you turn it on, the face is 'sucked' in to reveal the knobs and allow you to operate them. Ergo, "suckface".

Heather it's clearly a gimick but it's fun, in person it's very noticeable but subtle enough not to be a nuisance. To me it's the motor noise that's the dead giveaway, if I could improve it I would try to quiet the operation down. If it was totally silent it'd be just awesome.

Here's a quick video I took of mine on my workbench ... showing the exact same thing but maybe more apparent what's going on.

That would be an awesome "security" feature. Put it on a separate switch somewhere and if someone steals it they won't be able to use it.
There's one for sale near me but out of my price range.
 
Yeah, they're pretty Cheesy, but would I have a clean, working one for reasonable money ? Is Noo Yawk big? Is the Pope Catholic? Do big ol' bears... Well, you get the idea...
 
I always thought the suckfaces looked like they weren't completely put together, yet. Like they were waiting for an actual faceplate to be put on.

Thank you Teal'c for your response. I have those numbers but did a search for the actual specs of motor but no success.
 
Resurrecting this thread in the hopes of sorting out my second suckface. Couldn’t resist buying this RX 101 (also) cheaply, and when I replaced the belt, of course the very delicate limit switch fell apart. Or was already in pieces from previous owners repair attempt. Anybody that’s opened one of these up knows how ridiculously complicated and over engineered this cool little gimmick is. Of course the switch is unobtainium, so why not re-wire and bypass the limit switch closed thereby fooling the unit to enable volume - as it won’t produce sound if that switch is not properly functioning, with the face retracted.
